Default WARNING : GRAPHIC PHOTOS, Not for sensitive people to view- Baby whale death.

I was in Monterey Bay last week and witnessed killer whales attacking a grey whale calf. The first one this season. This lasted for 4 hours. The transients ended up separating the mom and calf after about 2 + hours. The mom fought hard for her calf's survival, lifting it onto her stomach and back while slashing at the Orca with her tail. The transients repeatedly rammed the calf and bit at its baleen, ripping out chunks. Mom and calf where separated and mom was driven away. The calf lasted a surprisingly long time on its own, until finally being drowned.
This was very hard to have to view and photograph, nature can be very cruel sometimes.

Those are some amazing photos. It had to hard to watch but it’s nature. In the second photo, it shows how much bigger the mother was compared to the killer whales. It seems like just her landing on one of them once would have broken their back.

All the photo's are actually of the calf. The mother was huge but after fighting for two hours and putting the calf on top of her, she gave up and swam away. There are many more photo's on my Flickr that show mom and her huge tail.

I dont quite know how to say what I mean here, but this is a very real and honest set of nature photos. I find it hard to say I "like" the photos given the subject matter, but I am certainly impressed and they tell a story very well. Congratulations on getting these.

I strongly encourage any other members to go and look at the Flickr page. Selena (jude01) has an extremely impressive collection of wildlife photos (especially sea creatures) on her Flickr page. The story above has many more photos and the recent sea lion shots are wonderful too.

I didn’t realize they attack other whales. I thought it was just seals, walruses, etc. I would say the risk of attacking a whale would be too great.
