Blind shooting

I've been practicing aiming my camera at scenes WITHOUT looking in the viewfinder. I'd like to get good at this because I think it can make for better spontaneous street photography. (maybe one day I'll buy one of those attachments)

I took this shot in old Montreal by lowering the camera to knee level and choosing what i thought was a good angle. I think this one worked. It's still a snap (there's a poll in front of the driver's face) and I have not done anything to this except levels.... it's just to illustrate that it can be done with loads of practice.

Good job! Sometimes it's for fun, sometimes it's a way not get locked up. All of the images in this directory: http://www.rthtg.net/john/Dubai_2/ were taken that way. I was inside a shopping mall, camera around my neck in true tourist mode, and I had one hand on it to keep the strap tight (to minimize movement) and square to my body - I just looked toward the subject and pressed the button... about 1 in 5 was worth keeping...

With tilt screens, I don't need to shoot blind. :):) People just think that I am looking at the shots that I have already taken. If you are in the shade as well, no one notices you.

I like those blind snaps from Dubai tirediron. LOVE the timeless clothing and the 'juxtaposition' of it in a modern shopping center.


Gotta get me one of them tilt screens tegan.

This is a skill you need to develop with each lens/camera combination you own.

My aim with a Canon 30D and 50mm is almost pinpoint everytime as I have worked on it. My cuurent combination of Nikon D200 and 85 1.8 needs a little practice still.
