Thanks to JAS Photo (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/members/jas_photo/) for coming up with this idea I think it could be a lot of fun. I volunteered to start of with #1. Please keep count as you add to the thread. I know this is a bit of a repeat as I posted him in another thread but I wanted to use his image as a starting point. Can't wait to see the second one! Cheers :)

Ok - Posting my stranger now. Despite the intense gaze he gave me, I did indeed ask permission. (I usually do, not always but usually) Thx - Marko

# 5,6 and 7 shot at English Bay, Vancouver, in the spring of this year. Quite the place for people watching. It is not very easy to take pictures of people without being 'found out' ... but I think the most effective photography of people is the candid shot; to me, it tells a story, raw and unobstructed, honest and true.

Well, kind of a cheat since I was there in part to take photos. It's hard to get candids when they know you are there to take photos, but I put on the long lens and sniped a few shots. So technically, this is a stranger, one of the many celebrants at Mark's Canada Day Happy Birthday Bash.

Bert was one of the attendees of Mark's Canada Day Birthday Bash party and when the band took a break, the karaoke was on. Bert got up and sang. While he may have the craggy face of a life hard lived, he sang like an angel. One song was not enough for the crowd who clamored for more but Bert must have been an adherent to the adage leave them wanting more and sang only the one song.

This thread isn't racing to completion, but it has been on my mind since Iguanasan started it. Perhaps it has to do with the organizing of the Public Photography day in September. I bought the t-shirt. And there are lots of public places full of people in Calgary these days.
It was exhilarating yesterday to take photos of all these strangers. Would I want someone to snap one of me and put it on the internet? I got thinking about the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Applying it here, I wouldn't mind a picture of me published anywhere without my knowledge unless: it was used for commercial gain, it was exploitive or used out of context or it was demeaning or clearly unflattering.
I must say it was strange to be trying to take pictures at a long distance, usually across a street, with the idea of capturing images to post here. Perhaps it's art... capturing the unself-conscious moment.
Then I had the problem of how to collate them. Eventually I settled on trying to use Lightroom 3, which I am evaluating. Made making a collage simple. Thoughts?

Hey, Mike. I certainly appreciate your enthusiasm and you've created a very interesting set. JAS assumed there were only 10 because that's all that can be seen since your image is so wide. I hope you don't mind but I will leave the count there. My vision for the thread was that everyone might have a chance to contribute and it makes it difficult if two or three people fill it up in a couple of posts. So, JAS' photo will be #34 and we'll continue from there.

#36 The Baby

Quite a while bakc Greg and I went to Carburn Park in Calgary. Our Photoclub had an assignemet out: "Circle(s)". So we were on the hunt for such objects. We came to a playground, and yes, there were quite a number of circles there. This young mother with twins was there as well, and I asked if I could take a picture of one of the twins, soother and all (soother being the circle). So here it is:

As I was saying: circles was the theme. Here is Greg taking it to the limits again. This was in early spring, so it was none too warm. However, with him on the ground, I had the opportunity to capture a number of circles, where he only got one! :evil2:

Lately I've been thinking about the various People of Walmart pictures that people insist on sending me. Although I do wonder what the people in the photographs are using for brains and/or whether they own a mirror, I'm more disturbed by the fact that many people see no problem with posting insulting photos and laughing at them. I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to tell my dad especially not to send them without him arguing that I'm being too rigid. I may end up simply ignoring the messages. Your comments fit in well with what I've been mulling over lately.

JAS_Photo
07-26-2010, 06:45 PM
I have never seen the "People of Walmart" thingy but the 100 strangers as first conceived was never meant to be demeaning in any way. Actually, as first conceived, you ask the person for the photograph, find out their name and a couple of things about them, then post the photo. It is an exercise in approaching strangers for photographs. Our "100 strangers" is a bit more liberal and more like street photography in that we are allowed to post photos of unnamed strangers. My criteria for choosing a stranger is that they look interesting or are doing something interesting. I put as much work into the processing as a posed portrait, so I am hoping that if they were to see themselves they would be happy with the photo. :)

mbrager

Q1 and JAS, thanks for your comments. I agree with your approaches to the concept completely. Naturally, people make such interesting subjects, it's hard to resist the temptation. We must use power very carefully however. Mike

#40 Daniel and Renan
So I was down at Fort Calgary looking for shots of minimalism for the months assignment.
I headed over to the barracks to see what I could find when I was stopped by Daniel who wanted to ask me some questions about the Fort. After answering a few questions, I showed him where he and his Father Renan could see and read the history as posted on the wall near the Fort. They were visiting from Brasil and had traveled all across Canada this summer, stopping in places such as Montreal, Toronto, Calgary. Tomorrow/today they are heading to Banff for 4 days and then onto Vancouver and Victoria.
I gave them pointers of what to see when they visit Banff and the mountains, Lake Louise etc.
Funny,,,,,On the way to the wall, I showed them Saskatoon berries which they thought were absolutely delicious and had never seen before...could not stop eating them and took pictures of them as well! They had all kinds of questions (seemed particularly interested in how we deal with the cold in winter...lol) and they showed me photos of Rio de Janero where they live.
I ended up talking to them for about 45 minutes and we exchanged emails took photos. It was really a cool moment spent. I hope we end up keeping in touch as it made my day chatting with 2 very interesting and charming boys. :)

Its actually not as bad as you think.
1. Smile
2. Pick on something about the person that they are wearing or is striking and complement them about it.
For example the first man with the leather hat. I saw this hat on the other side of the wall. Stepped on a bench and saw the man and said to him that I loved his hat.
3. Stike up a conversation so you have the person engaged first. For example I found out that this man was visiting from Kenya.
4. After a bit of a conversation I mentioned that I was on photography workshop and if it was ok if I took a picture of him. Don't just ask for a picture but give a reason. You can always say that you on on a photo assignment. (Thats not necessarily lying, we are always on some personal photo assignment). The man said ok and went through the building and came out to the sidewalk I got a few pictures.
5 Offer to show them the picture on the camera screen.

This general technique worked for me in the four people I got pictures of.

A few other things to keep in mind.
1. Have the camera setup and ready before you approach the person. You will lose the person real fast if you are struggling to adjust the camera.
2. You have more time than you think. I tended to rush, but the photographer teaching the workshop said that generally you have that person for 3-4 minutes. So take advantage and get lots of pictures.
3. Don't be afraid to ask the person to move to a spot nearby explaining that the background, lighting will be better.
4. The concensus from workshop group is that people that wear clothes, hair, etc that really stand out are more likely to say yes. They want to be noticed and are thrilled that you want to take their picture. Example in my pictures, the transvestite with the sunglasses and short gray hair.

Finally. You need a bit of a thick skin. Don't take it badly if you get rejected. There will be others that will agree. Depending on where you are, in general more people will say yes than no.

Hope this helps.

Nice image, Iggy ... I wonder when Apple is going to come out with a phone that has a built in chair with it?

Thanks! I'm sure the chair will be an add-on that will be the same price as the phone ;)

#67 Hermann The Painter

Met Hermann in Heidelberg while we were staying with my mom; one afternoon I walked the path behind the house and there he was. Struck up a conversation and took one shot. Should have taken more, but such is life ...

lovely eyes Matt! Here's a mother and Daughter I took on November 11. I don't know if there's a story here or not but the moment seemed poignant to me :

#71 & #72 Mark and Stephanie

Out for a walk in the Public Gardens today and this couple asked me to take their photo with their camera. I then offered to take a couple with my camera and ended up with this as a result. Really felt kind of nervous talking to other people about my photography. Usually, it's just a flower which doesn't normally chat back ;)

Recalled this thread when I was looking at the layout of the next gallery I will be showing at and saw these two looking at the current exhibit so I thought I should at least add participate in something on the forum lol .... Just wish the light from the window did not reflect off the glass on some of the photos.

I wouldn't know him from Adam's tom cat. Managed to catch this just before shift change on the last outage we worked. The highest point on the plant makes it a great place to enjoy a view and cool breeze.
