Hello I hope to garner some good tips on improving my new hobby of photography. When I was a little boy my grandfather gave me a Kodak 35 mm camera with a fixt lens. I was instructed by my granddad how to use the camera he and I spent hours in the dark room together developing and drying my black and white prints. As I got older I lost interest with the time restraints with my profession and rising a family. The expense of film that frankly a lot of the time did not turn out was discouraging. Now I have been using digital point and shoot cameras with a lot of success and enjoyment I just purchased a Canon Rebel Xsi with an EF-S 18-55 mm kit lens. I have had this camera for a month now so I’m going through the normal experimental and learning curve. What I have discovered is I need a better all-purpose lens . The other day I took a photo of a mother moose and her two calf’s they were about 800 meters a way from my hiding area. (I didn’t get the desired results with the kit lens.) The Japan Camera dealer is trying to convince me that the Tamren 18-270 Telephoto Zoom lens, with vibration control is a good choice as all-purpose lens. ($639.99). The lens will be my first priority because without a good lens I just wont get the photos I want. My second purchase will be an external flash and then a good sold tripod. I know my wish list is adding up and so is the $$$.

Happy shooting.

Welcome to the forum, Peter. You will find this forum a friendly bunch, sprinkled with a bit of sarcasm from time to time.

I noticed you are prepared to embrace the bottomless pit of neverending expense when it comes to equipment. :evil2: May I suggest the "camera store" in Calgary? They are on 11th ave SW, and have by far the largest selection of everything. And some good people with solid advice as well.

Have fun, and welcome aboard!

Welcome! If you have a tendency to stalk the downtown areas, we may cross paths one day!

I've seen many people with that camera and 18-55 kit lens get awesome photos. Better
lenses can help but you need to get the basics down first.

The 18-270 Tamron sounds like a great do everything lens.
