Hi members,

Just curious about something. This month I haven't nominated any photos yet....

Since i choose pic of the month...I find that I often lean toward the photos that i nominate...which doesn't seem right to me.

Here's a few things/options i thought of:

1 - Should i just stop nominating?
2 - Effective immediately, should we have a GUEST choose the image of the month, OR last month's winner choose image of the month.

Please feel free to post opinions here or send them to me via PM.

Many Thanks!
Marko

I think you should nominate. I see no reason why not. The fact that you lean towards the shots you nominate makes sense since you chose them for a reason. I like that you explain why you chose the image and I find I learn a lot from your explanation.

So I vote:
'yes' you should still nominate
&
'No' to the guest, but am okay if you want last month's winner to choose (and you do in case that person cannot) as long as they also provide the same explanation. However, if it was someone like me (unlikely but you never know), I would have a hard time explaining why as clearly and knowledgeable as you.

Thanks bambi!

If members like to read my reasoning for choosing the images, I could also add my :twocents: to any image chosen as image of the month by another member/guest.

just a thought.

I'd love more opinions please.

many thx!

You should still nominate but it's a nice idea to have the winner nominating one as well.

I'm going to flip the coin a bit. I definitely enjoy reading your analysis of the winning image but I'm going to suggest that since you are the judge you should NOT seed the entries by nominating.

Secondly, though, I'm confused, which is rather easy to do I'm afraid, isn't last month's winner already choosing their favourite five for voting thought now that I write this I don't remember this happening in a while.?:confused:

This happens every month, yes. This Month mad Aussie chooses the 5 but he's on vacation for another week or so.

If the desire were there we could simply abolish the "admin's" winner choosing the five. We could let mad aussie choose his favorite image once July is over. Then THAT person he chose would choose their image of the month the following month, and so on. i could always add my :twocents: after the choice is made if members want me to.

Still looking for more opinions.
Thx!

I see no reason to stop doing it the way you are Marko. In the end it's your in depth opinion we want to see and read. And whether you nominate or not, you are going to choose the photo which appeals to you most anyway. Whether you've nominated that photo or not will make no difference to your decision. Nominating when you see a good shot at least helps you to find the photos you want to consider later for this.

Having a guest though once in awhile as an extra 'Accomplished Guest's Choice' might be a good addition.

Hi hear ya MA but I'm not sure how many members honestly agree with your opinion.

People are people and they like to win prizes, even honourary ones....and the way I judge a photo (or choose to nominate) is mostly based on my knowledge and experience. But it is ALSO based on personal preferences; it's unavoidable. This personal preference is subjective not objective....and therefore it may be unfair.

more opinions please:D

Thx!

I'm with MA on this ... :grouphug:

Okay I'll bite.
Since you feel uneasy/uncomfortable towards the issue then I don't think you should nominate images. I think leaving the nominations to the members and then the admin choosing a winner seems like a good idea to me.:) However, in all honesty I am okay with either.
I think maybe 2-4 times (seasonal) a year it would be nice to see someone else pick an image of the month instead of you Marko and that way you can nominate that month.
I guess for me, that way everybody wins. :)

I am with Matt who is with M.A. on this. It used to be that Marko chose an image from all the photos not just the nominated ones and the only reason he started to choose from the pool of nominees was to cut down on the number of photos he had to go through in a month. At least that is my understanding of it. so if he wants to add to the pool, not a problem. The winner of the members vote gets to choose their nominees anyway. so we have a member's selection and Marko's selection. Works for me.

Although I haven't been following the forum for that long a time, I like it that Marko chooses a Best of Month photo and explains why. I understand it is his subjective choice which is fine with me, since it's art after all. It makes sense that he can nominate as well, since Marko is one of the group. I also like the idea of last month's winner picking five favorites.
Just to throw in another wrinkle, I have wondered why one or more of the assignment pictures isn't picked as the top of the heap. That would offer us more feedback about our work.

I agree with Mike about the assignment picture. A lot of stuff gets posted one right on top of the other and I think some of the photos are never even seen.

Again, makes no difference to me but if it bothers you Marko, you do what you think is best for you. :)

EDITED BY ADMIN - Casil I thought your idea was a good enough one so that it merited its own thread (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f8/assignment-forum-idea-10668.html). Hope that's cool Marko.
