So I bought a cheap Huey monitor calibrator. I'll upload the same picture twice, once edited with calibrator, the other edited before calibration ... you tell me which one is the calibrated one ... this oughta be interesting

Just like that, I would say the one on the right is the «calibrated» one.

Thanks for your input ... I should have made this a poll ... I will wait for more opinions ... this will decide if I return this thing to London Drug or not :evil2:

Now I'm tempted to say that the one on left is after the "calibration".

Hmmm ... is that what you really think or what you think after I made the comment ... hopefully all will have a look and just tell me "left" or "right"

Are these processed identically? Or not processed at all?

If processing is a variable here then I'd say I hope that the right hand side is the calibrated one because the red is much better. Also, most uncalibrated monitors tend to be set too bright which leads me to the left photos as the uncalibrated one.

MA, they were processed to what was pleasing to my eye; so both looked good to me once I was done with the conversion. I have to say, though, that I had to really punch the saturation after processing. I bought the huey, cause it was relatively cheap. It does not give any "numeric value" choices ... so I am not sure if I am going to keep it. So I cannot set the gamma, for instance. I assume it is set to 2.2, but again, that is an assumption. As far as Color temperature is concerned: I am not sure where it is at. I assume again it is fixed @ 6500K.

I think it would be difficult for us to make an accurate judgement if processing varibles are present.

Having said that, I'd say the left shot is slightly washed out and needs some contrast, and the right photo has a tad too much contrast created shadows just a bit strong but the colours look better to me.

On top to that, MA, I suppose you would only be able to tell the real difference if the monitor you are viewing on is calibrated ... so there is that variable as well.

Needless to say I look at the images on here now and they sure look different to me ... very very different. Especially mine :headslap: I printed the two images out side by side on a 8˝ x 11 sheet .. and yes, there is a difference in the tonal quality, for sure. I always hated my printer, now it is not so bad ... operator error :headslap: without calibration my images did not satisfy me at all on that printer.

I calibrated my monitors only 2 days ago also :)

Sounds like you've made astep in the right direction if the printed versions are looking better although printer calibration makes a huge difference there as well.

I know I prefer the one on the right. I tend to prefer shots with brighter, more saturated colours. I would guess from the conversation that it is the one that has been done on a calibrated monitor.

This is so weird ... I just DO NOT LIKE the way my monitor now shows colors. To boot, most of the images I am looking at on this forum are loosing their appeal as well, so I am really really wondering about the Huey. After calibration there is a screen with a protrait of a woman ... and you can chose before and after ... and let me tell you, that protrait looks washed out in the greys and blacks .... really frustrating.

But you are right, the image on the right is the one done after the calibration, and I have to say it looks nicer on my screen. But somehow I do not like the way the rest of the screen looks now .. maybe I have to get used to it ... what have your experiences been with calibration?

Certainly sounds weird Matt. My suggestion is take it back and buy one you can trust.

Never calibrated mine so I'm afraid I don't have any advice.

On my desktop monitor the one on the left looks like it needs a very slight amount of contrast while the one on the right looks artificial. The skin tones especially look wrong. On my laptop the one on the left is a bit more noticeably washed out, though not horrible, and the one on the right looks fairly close to right, especially the skin tones. Neither screen is calibrated.

I've looked into calibrating hardware a little bit, because it's on my wish list. The general impression I got was that with the Huey you got what you paid for. Don't know if that's helpful or not.

The skin tones especially look wrong. This is exactly how it appears on my calibrated monitor. But keep in mind monitors are different and very few are meant for photography. Most are multipurpose and too bright. But if the image looks better, that's good for sure. Just as an FYi the colours/contrast on a calibrated monitor will likely look duller after calibration. It does take some getting used to.

Indeed, and another thing i noticed: when i scroll, balck text seems to turn slightly red. Maybe it is the monitor...I am going to try the Spider 3 Pro, methinks, and then see ... at twice the money .. oh well

Well, the HUEY went back to the vendor. So now I am going to try a Spider 3 Pro next .. once I find one reasonably priced

I had trouble with some redness appearing in one of my monitors yesterday. It appeared to be going out of calibration within a day. I pulled the graphic card out, cleaned it and reseated it and so far it seems good again. Not saying you have the same issue.

It is my understanding that most people have their monitors too bright so when they are calibrated they are made darker (and that's what happened to me when I calibrated my monitor)

Therefore you will probably up the brightness on the photo edit to make it look right.

With that logic I would say the brighter one (the one on the left) would be the one after calibration.
