Master Class Assignment - level 2 assignment

Perhaps a second assignment could go on at the same time as the main assignment and be a little more difficult, specific, and not necessarily so democratic. For example, using 90 degree lighting to bring out texture in a subject. It could be human, it could be their face or hands. It could be a loaf of bread on a cutting board. Other assignments could be something like an available light portrait, or still life. It could be an a specific assignment that is further required to convert it to B&W or desaturate it. It could be one that uses selective focus. It could be an abstract. Anyway, the point being that it is a specific assignment. Then the next person, before posting their own photo can make a brief analysis of the previous post, stating how they believe the person above them achieved the desired requirements or perhaps missed the mark in which case they could suggest ideas on how they feel the particular photo could be altered or reshot to achieve the desired result.

I like it as well. I don't do it as often as I should but I liked setting up the Maxwell's Silver Hammer shot way back when we did photos and songs. Having a harder challenge would be good to really make you think about the shot.

We could make a few suggestions and they could be chosen from that. But since this is the last day of the month, shall I suggest 90 degree lighting to create texture? Photo converted to B&W. No use of HDR as shadows are an integral part of this assignment.

My suggestion would be to put a restriction on whatever the regular assignment is. That way a person can shoot for the regular assignment or if they are feeling like they want a challenge then they can enter it into the master class one.

So, for example, this month's challenge was "Leading lines / Perspective". Master class could have required no man-made objects thereby making it difficult to find nice straight leading lines or diminishing perspective that is relatively easy like railroads, buildings, stairs, etc.

I think this would help the junior members see what the more experience shooters can find compared to their own entries within the regular assignment/challenge.

I'd also restrict how many images a person should post for this. 1 - 2 max perhaps? That would make people really think about their shot(s).

I like this as the first suggestion. It is indeed challenging. Given that it is the last day of the month and that we want to try this next month (August), maybe we should just go for this

Regular challenge is not going anywhere. :)

The 'master' challenge could be a subset of the regular challenge, in future months. But for August, just so we can get it up fast without too much thought, I think we should go with Jas's suggestion. :twocents:

Okay then I have set up a new subforum for a level 2 assignment (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f34/90-degree-lighting-sidelight-create-texture-b-w-11049.html)...for the master class assignment...I think that name is a bit lofty though so I have renamed it level 2 assignment.

Feel free to comment on any aspect of the setup of this new forum right here in this thread.
