Michaelaw, that's gorgeous. Great the focus on the body and then to see the blurring wings.

Thanks all....I was getting pretty frustrated in the end as I was using the 70-300mm which is a slooow focusing lens if it starts to hunt. Used the d90, 70-300mm, ISO 1250, 1/750, f5.6. I used 1250 ISO to get the shutter speed up to freeze the wing action. This ISO speed is the last stop before noise on the d90. Standing on a bridge with a hovering Dragonfly between me and the water. Frustrating work to say the least as more often than not, just as you get the shot dialled in, Mr. Dragonfly decides to speed off...GGgrrrrrr!

Holy crap. So you really did pick him out of the air. Amazing is all I can say. I can't imagine anything more difficult.

I defy anyone to get one on the move  Once they're hovering it gets easier. The hard part is getting focus, exposure, and comp all in a line before they zip off. You can narrow the odds a bit by watching for a while then get a fair idea as their favourite "Hover spots" That prediction helps pre selecting exposure and focus. In this case I predicted where he would hover then found a blade of grass or something roughly the same distance for focus, got a pre focus so that when he stopped, the camera lens could see it and just tighten up if that makes any sense:D If you're not set to the right focal distance the 70-300 can pass right by the dragon and end up locked on a water bubble in the creek below:headslap:
