Andrew, loves playing on my drum kit, so it seemed like an ideal way to get him to sit still(ish) on a stool while I could have a play with some more lighting. I think this is my favourite shot out of the ones I got.

Love the capture of the expression, so full of life, and the processing is excellent. Well done Richard.

That is fabulous! What an expression! Very Norman Rockwellish in spirit and style.

Fantastic expression on his face. Love this one.:thumbup:

Maybe you've covered this before but you always have a great solid background. Are you shooting in a studio?

Thanks guys,

The set-up is a large 5 in 1 reflector (white side facing camera) hanging on an old mic stand. I then have 1 flash lighting the reflector, and another 2 flashes with umbrella lighting Andrew from the front.

It's similar to this lighting I used for unplugged (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f13/august-2010-photography-assignment-minimalism-10962-3.html#post77468):

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5VXBKWV6nyA/TFh1dGVahrI/AAAAAAAAAm4/iCyjFIEc-go/s640/IMG_1971.jpg

but the reflector hung on the mic stand, and the umbrella's pulled back a bit.

I would love to get some seamless paper at some point and have ago at doing more than just a head and shoulders shot.

Thanks for the lighting setup Richard - It will be useful to many.

Seamless paper is a great buy. I bought a long roll (12 feet wide and 30 feet long i believe) a coupla years back and I believe it was only 60ish dollars.

You'll then need a long pole ;), lol.....(actually I STILL use the heavy shower curtain rod that I constructed 15 years ago) and that goes into the roll.

Then you need 2 lightstands each equipped with a super-clamp (to hold the pole).http://www.photography.ca/wp-content/uploads/photo-podcast-35-image1.jpg
The superclamp is essential and is about 25-30 dollars each.

cute drumming shot Richard, love the expression!
In terms of critique, I find the skin tones a bit red here...and the hand, ya cut through your boy's right hand. Eyes could also be a wee bit sharper.....still - very cute just the way it is. Hope that helps.

Just in case people are interested in accessories (which make your life SO much easier)... here's a link to a podcast with several links to the accessories in the shownotes. http://www.photography.ca/blog/2008/01/14/clamps-stands-arms-and-adapters-photography-podcast-35/
