View Full Version : September 2010 photography assignment - Doors

They are everywhere and we all have them. Many photographers have done books of them, maybe it's a cliche but I have wanted to do a series of them myself just for fun and that subject is DOORS. They come in all shapes sizes and levels of elegance and/or disrepair. They can be photographed to show texture, shape, importance. Sometimes they have people standing in them . Just a thought. What do you think?

works for me :D

I'm cool with that!

I like it too!!!

Wonderful idea. The idea with the most support becomes the theme of the month.

I'm moving this thread to the assignment forum.

Thx!

marko

sounds good

Yeah, but...with Jim gone and the rest of the band scattered all over the place its gonna be a tough assignment.

I'm in.

 a little incense, some chanting and we should be able to do it!

Just put some tunes on the ipod and keep your hands on the wheel and I am sure you will find some Doors! (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xu7ot_the-doors-roadhouse-blues-live_music) :headslap:

works for me too!

A door is a door and so all of them are open since no restriction was given. My, that's a small balcony! Just enough room for two. :) Nice!

Very cool door, Moin Moin! I love the architectural detail with the moldings and cornices.

I thought for sure Iggy was going to be first here as I saw a very colourful door on his Flickr. ;)

I thought about it. Took the shot because I knew the assignment was doors, but I took it on Sunday. 3 days too early.... I'll find more! :)

Good luck with the new house. It would be nice to have a few acres to work with and a lot more options for taking photos. I believe the red door means lots of luck for you as well. Have fun.

Cool view out your new front door, Bambi. Is that an oak tree out there? Love the red front door as well. Very nice post work as well.

Actually I have no idea how to do post work. The center of the structure was smooth white rock and just responded to the flash more than the coarse textured walls. The shots without flash were more even but I liked this one better.

Well, it's colorful, that's for sure. I like the framing around both - it adds to the sense of confusion.

Thanks, casil. I have a plan for later but I'm shootin' whatever door interests me at the moment and that one with sculpture in front of it spoke to me.

I got a shot of one today and just as I was taking it a lone hand popped out from behind the door and reached around the front... Unfortunately, I cut part of it off (the door...not the hand )so I'm not submitting, but had I nailed it It would have been a keeper for certain!

Ok, I am getting behind but everyone has great doors to share! Here we go, I will try to catch up this way:

1. http://www.photography.ca/Forums/attachments/f13/9195d1283469759-september-2010-photography-assignment-doors-door-2.jpg
asnow, I do not know if they were confused about the window door thing but you got to love that teal blue and the framing of the door/ window by the caepenter is slightly odd!

2. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4083/4952798252_8c621f0226_b.jpg
Casil, that is a weird rough looking door and wall. It appears to have two deadbolts, a peekhole and no door knob. Kind of makes you wonder.

3. http://www.photography.ca/Forums/attachments/f13/9197d1283482684-september-2010-photography-assignment-doors-img_2137_edited.jpg

Iggy, that is cool! Lol, it looks like we are looking through a very large Tweedle Dee's legs.

4. http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy94/CircleOfConfussion/LightMyFire.jpg

Barefoot, yep, that lights my fire. You gotta love a red door!

5. http://www.photography.ca/Forums/attachments/f13/9321d1283559698-september-2010-photography-assignment-doors-img_2202_edited.jpg

Very pretty, Iggy! Both the red door which is very evocative of the maritimes, and the pink glow of morning light!

6. http://www.photography.ca/Forums/attachments/f13/9324d1283569385-september-2010-photography-assignment-doors-img_2021_2.jpg

jhuang 999, lovely ornate door. Nice contrast of the light to the dark of the interior. Really brings out the carving on the door.

Thanks Ig...after re-reading the "rules" and posting a comment to get clarification over at the other forum in which this whole thing started, I found I had misinterpreted the idea. The ideas was as you originally stated, to take at least one shot every day with the same lens, not to only take one shot. :headslap:
I don't think I would have lasted very long had it been only one shot...you are right...it is a dumb idea.:wall-an:

I happened upon this old door and in my mind's eye I saw a cross. I was reminded of the church and all it's recent disturbing revelations ! Thus the title - jimmy

jimmy, I totally see the cross. What a rough hewn door.

Do you believe in ghosts? Sit back from your screen and look for the eyes, they are just beyond the crypt door!!

Did a nice tour of downtown Calgary today, in the company of two well known local photographers ... spied another door:

Oh, and we inadvertantly stepped on the door that provides an entrance to the bowels of Calgary

Ha! Ha! I watched you photograph those bare butts and did not know what you would get exactly. Very cool.

Love those decorative manhole covers too!

At the crypt door. Knock before entering ! !! !!!

Interestingly I was thinking of going to Dundurn Castle yesterday, thought that there might be some interesting old doors there. Looks like somebody else had the same idea. However, I opted for the Toronto Pioneer Village instead and got a picture of this door. I believe it was to a cellar cold storage.

That is a cool door! Really an old pioneer life kind of feel to it.

Another door, this time with a reflection of one of my favorite photographers; happy shooting, Greg!

Here's a couple more doors from Pioneer Village.

Drove around the trendy suburb of Inglewood, looking for some interesting doors. Found door to house 906. However, the GATE is the real interesting part. Added some HDR toning, and here we go ...

Matt, don't you love these non-conformist neighbourhoods where you can prop a gate there without a fence? And paint your house any colour you can imagine? Love their neighbour's tree too!

After retiring in February, I have started to spend some time doing volunteer work in photography for several not-for-profit organizations. This is a door to a small Baptist church in Long Island, NY which a community resources center uses for its base.

This photo was taken when I went to scout the place before being given an actual assignment.

Wonderful doors, Barefoot! The vault gears reminded me of a Club I worked in, "The Georgian" Club, in Vancouver which moved into an old Bank Building. It was a private Ladies Club that was fixed up beautifully but because the vaults were too heavy to try and move they converted one of them into a ladies washroom. The ladies could then coyly say they were going to the "vault".
