I am thinking about purchasing my first polarizer filter. I understand that I need a circular polarizer for a DSLR. I am looking at the Hoya 72mm for my sigma lense. But I don't know what the benefit or if its necessary to have the multi coated filter vs the single coat? Can somebody please help!?

Personally I'd go regular rather than warm. Multi-coated filters will handle more extreme conditions better but most of us are happy enough with single ... for the price.

multicoated filters are not so prone to producing additional lensflares and reflexes. If you are looking at Hoya take the Hoya HD Plarizer!!!!!

I have one and it's so great. Before it I had the hoya pro1 Digital polarizer which was also multicoated but what I found out with it and some other multicoated filters is that it's a pain to whipe them clean. You often have a hard time to remove the smears you produce. Not so with the HD series, so easy to clean, very resistant against scratches, I haven't produced one scratch in 2 months usage and I have it on my lense 90% of the time and was shooting also in quite windy contidions on beaches where the sand was blown around. And moreover It only eats less than one stop of light!

hope that helped!!

Good post mibreit! I too have come across the fact that multi-coated filters are a pain to clean...and I have had multicoated Hoyas, and yup a pain to clean.

Good to know that this newer filter is easier to clean HOYA FILTERS - The Difference is Clear (http://www.hoyafilter.com/products/hoya/HD-01.html)

thanks for the advice! The Hoya HD polarizer sounds great... albeit the filter price (gulp)

I have the B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer Multi-Coated Glass Filter, which I am very happy with, I guess in the 72mm range it would run you about 145 dollars on amazon. I would almost suggest to get a larger filter, since you might want to buy a lens with a larger filter thread at a later time. Then it is easy to just use a step down ring and use the same filter for multiple lenses. My 77mm filter serves also my 72mm lenses in that way.

Matt, that is an interesting idea that I will look into, thanks!
