up in the White Mountains there are the remains of the Redstone Quarry works. Here are a couple of shots of the giant lathes used to turn the granite slabs. They were coal-fired steam engines. Some of the biggest transmissions I've ever seen.

Put the camera into a hole in the wall and held my breath to get this one -

Used a tripod for this one showing the other side of the engine. I love the birch tree growing in the middle of the rails -

Very cool! You know they have been abandoned awhile when you have a big old tree growing in the works!

thanks guys. I couldn't find an exact date on line, but it seems it was abandoned in the late 1940s. Production just stopped. The site is huge and there are lots of ruined buildings, most of which I didn't photograph due to time constraints & bad light. I do want to go back though. I also just heard about the remains of a whole town not far from this location. It's in the middle of the White Mountain National Forest now, but accessible still. So cool.

Interesting captures of a very interesting location. I bet you got a lot of wonderful shots.

Also, I read your blog and I'm glad you had someone with which to go shooting. I don't get out with those kind of people often enough, myself. It's kind of crazy the way people think your crazy just because you like to take pictures.

Just for you Ed - Frosted Rust (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f22/frosted-rust-13032.html#post91213)!

thanks everyone for the comments. I never knew that was there. Of course being The Granite State means we had lots of quarries over the years, but I've never been to one. Thanks to a flickr friend we had a meet up and a guide. Our little flickr group is very active with meet ups.
