View Full Version : PC sync cables ... did I get what I thought I did?

Sorry guys, this is going to be a serious newbie question. I currently use a Canon 7D and a 580EXII speedlite.

I am new to studio lighting and until now I've only done a bit of experimenting with off-camera flash, using the 7D's built in wireless capabilities (light pulses, requires line-of-sight). I now want to start learning and experimenting more in the world of studio lighting so I bought an umbrella kit, and a pc sync cable. However, I really think the cable they gave me is the wrong cable. I need someone to confirm this before I take it back.

The cable I got has two different ends on it. They appear to be male/female pairs, as I can plug them into each other. One end will fit into both the camera body and the flash individually. The other side doesn't appear to fit into either.

Did they sell me the wrong cable, or am I simply trying to use the wrong jack on one side? If this is the wrong cable, any ideas what this cable I have is actually for?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Kami,

One end should fit onto camera's sync the other end may require an additional simple adapter. I'd go back to the store with the camera and flash.

Sounds like both the 7D and the 580EX use male connectors. I obviously have a male to female cable. I was confused because the salesman had a demo 7D and 580EX and showed me where the connectors on each were as he handed me the cable, so I assumed the cable was right. I will have to exchange it.

Thanks.
