Hey, I'm traveling around the world for a year and I'm bringing my camera, a couple memory cards and probably a portable card-reading 80G HDD. I was curious about setting up a FTP website to store my photo's online with.
How does the process work? And is the upload rate any faster then programs such as facebook or myspace?
Also, is there a cap on size?

The upload rate is purely determined by the bandwidth of the data connection. For example, on regular broadband, your upload speed is usualy a quarter to and eights of your download speed.
As far as servers, it purely depends on what you get. If you get a regular web hosting account, then the space you have is limited to the webspace you get with that account. Every service is different - hunt around for deals.

Having just completed a trip around the world myself, I'll offer some thoughts here. Don't rely on an on-line website, server or connection for the storage of all of your images. The simple fact is, in a lot of areas you simply won't be able to find a connection that will make it practical. The portablye HDD is one solution, but I suggest incorporating redundancy into your back-up plan, and burn all of your original images to DVD as you go. What I did was burn two disks of each set of images (I use 4bg cards in my camera so each one [roughly] equals a DVD), and I'd keep one with me, and then mail one home.
