That first photo is a real cracker and even more significant in knowing something about what happened later. It's a bit like looking at old family photos taken before your time, only you do not need the second photo because you know the people in the present and have heard the stories of the past. Having the before and after photos of strangers gives the photos instant relevance and we are able to relate to the people in them. Does that make sense?
