...a date with what could potentially be my new roomie and furever companion. I saw him online and filled out an application.

He's a big, hairy 2 year old border collie/great Pyrenees cross (who was a stray, almost euthanized prior to being placed in this animal rescue, who needs a serious brush and about 15 more pounds to gain) and I have a good feeling about him.
I so hope it works out....so far all my gut feelings have so I'm crossing my fingers this one will too.:fingerscr
If we match, the rescue person is willing to hold him until I move in less than 2 weeks.
Kinda fun to begin the whole dog hunt thing seriously....I have waited so long for it.

Just remember, with any new animal, establish yourself as the Alpha. NEVER let him take the lead, you are always first. Reward when appropriate and don't hesitate to scold in a gentle way.

My bona fides? Ever own Huskies? I currently do and they are the most difficult to establish pack rules with. Once you understand how dogs are supposed to think and you establish yourself as the Alpha, you will have little trouble. Don't hesitate to look him in the eye when he's done something you don't want him to.

Thank you for rescuing him.

keep us posted C. D'Arcy says that you can't go wrong if there's border collie in the mix!! Which makes Belle roll her eyes

:fingerscr it all works out!

what a handsome gentleman.
the name Bear gives me pause though. There's an out-of-control biter of a dog in my neighborhood named Bear. The owner is CONSTANTLY having to chase and call him so I hear "Bear!" yelled at the top of her voice all the time. I hope it's not an omen. He's all white and I'm not sure of his breed, but he's a lousy dog.

Thanks WD... The nice thing about this guy is he corrects beautifully when on leash. He is always watching you as if to say Is this what you want?"He will not be ready to go off leash for a bit as he is still quite unsure of new things having been a stray for the first 2 years of his life. I will get a long lead and use that for training once I get him used to life in the city a bit more. It will take time but I know I have the patience, he has it in him to be successful and he so desperately wants to please....you can see it in his eyes.
I had him following me on the property with the leash dragging behind after about an hour. Then we sat in the shade with his head on my lap for a while also and I gave him a desperately needed brushing which he tolerated very well. I think I there was enough fur that came off the guy to make another dog!

Indeed, very handsome puppy. I knew a Newfoundland "puppie" named Bear an number of years ago, he was a really sweet boy. Huge, but very nice to be around.

Wow, just one date and you are so quickly moving into a long term relationship! You work quick girl ;).
All kidding aside, love the idea of a rescue and he is some handsome lookin' fella' thats for sure. Very photogenic, by the looks of it, and lucky for you. Actually, you are both lucky to have found each other, as I know, he and yourself will be very good for each other.

What a fine looking pooch! Can't wait to see more of him in your photos. I'm not a dog owner myself but I love watching Cesar Milan in Dog Whisperer. There's a man who understands dogs. Great show for some canine insight.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes!:)
Yes HBG, this whole experience the last couple of months...selling, moving dog finding has been pretty fast and furious. When I saw him online I had a sense of him for some odd reason...a feeling in my gut which was confirmed within the first hour of meeting him. :)

Iggy, I too watch Cesar Milan regularly and I actually used some of is techniques on Bear this past weekend when getting to know him like approaching from the side and behind when first introduced.
I also have very good friends who live in South Africa (Johannesburg) who raise and train about 150 guard dogs (mostly Rotties and Shepherds) and they have offered to help via emails on any training issues I may have with him.
When I had Chase and they were out visiting, they had Chase walking on heel in less than 5 minutes. They had him walking on heel and ignoring the dogs in an off leash dog park on a Saturday morning! It was filled with dogs running around also - which is something I would have never believed had I not seen it!
Pretty amazing to watch them work. Funny enough that the other dog owners were watching them also then were coming up to them after asking for their business card and phone number! LOL. They did a session with a couple dogs while there and had them corrected pretty quickly also.
I used on Bear what I remembered and learned by watching them as well and had him on heel pretty quick also.

I think that Cesar Milan has some interesting ideas but for training he's not the one I would go to.
