View Full Version : October 2011 - Photography assignment - BW or Monochrome

I was thinking perhaps of B&W or monochrome such as sepia or selenium for the monthly challenge. Either by setting your camera for B&W or converting in your editing program.

For the advanced - window light perhaps? A portrait where someone is obviously lit by a window light would be ideal but an object or pet would be cool too.

I was certainly happy to see the participation in the colour yellow challenge that we had this month. I hope whatever we decide on we can get the same level of participation. :)

I like your ideas but I have two of my own:

Regular Challenge: Red -- There will be lots of red leaves and red apples in October!

Advanced Challenge: Creative Self Portrait -- Let's get out from behind the camera (or not if you have a mirror) and have some fun posing.

I'm for B&W challenge and (I don't know if it can express my option for this one) Creative Self Portrait for advance challenge.
So one from JAS, one from Iguanasan :)

didn't we just do creative self portrait this summer? I'm cool with it either way.

love the idea of window light. that would be fun.
I also like the idea of b&w.

Personally I am dying to do anther book/song title theme shortly in the level one challenge as we've not done one since Feb 2010 and I know we had awesome participation in the first one we did. That or things that start with the letter D which may be fun also. :)

Another suggestion would be to pretend to be on a photo shoot with Jay Maisel and just wander the streets of your town looking for interesting light, colour and gesture.

Jas's 2 suggestions are great ones and look like they have the most support. Merging posts now. Thx Marko

Taken at the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C. on 8 October. I was with the Rogues supporting the Honor Flight (http://www.honorflight.org/) program. There were about 800 WWII vets from Wisconsin that day. Even met a sailor who was on the Yorktown. Wow!

Last night there was an art event in Halifax called Nocturne. I got down for a short while and got to see Atlantic Cirque (circus school) performing. This is one of the shots from that set.

Thanks, M!!! That was my best day of shooting since getting back into photography a month ago. I still need to tweak the dark area in the bottom left.

Nice addition KB!
Iggy - fab comp and concept here! Really dig the way this is framed. A bit more intense blacks might make this even sing louder
Ron - Love the fab tonailty of the BW here as well as the suggested "story"
asnow - the sepia works well for me here
Crashcat - love the play and unusual comp.
Ernst - Dig your play here as well - I'm sure james will be pleased.

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and thought that this assignment sounded fun. I thought a cemetery would be fitting with Halloween around the corner. I am completely new to photography so any advice on the picture would be appreciated.

I used a 18-135 kit lines at 18mm, f/14, 1/25 sec.

Thanks Marko. I noticed the fog when I got up and remembered your podcast about shooting in the fog so I rushed to the site. Less than 30 miniutes after getting the shots the fog was mostly gone. I think it added to the shot.

Another image just under the wire. Canon XT, Canon 50mm F1.8 lens.

With the autumn colours being so prominent in this part of Ontario, I found it very challenging and instructional to disregard them when taking shots for this workshop. Here is my favourite from a few weeks ago on a rainy afternoon. The lens was stopped down to F22 to get as much texture of the lichen-covered rock as possible over the whole field. Also took a few F8 image slices and will try combining them in the future to see if even more sharpness results.
