Thanks giving (Irecha)

Hey All,
Ethiopia is a country who has a caledar of its own. Our caledar starts on Septemeber 11 with 12 month of 30 days and a 13th month of 6-7 days. We just had our 2004th new year. It's a kind of mixed Julian and Egyptian caledar. Septemeber also marks the end of the rainy season. Starting Septemeber the country becomes shiny and daisies all over the fields. All most all tribes in Ethiopia celebrate the end of the rainy season by celebrating a thanks giving day for God for having given them a good rainy season(though that is not the case always;( ).

I took this picture in one of the celebration that took place yesterday.
Hope you like them. I know they could have been much better but I just wanted to share them.

Can I ask what they were doing by river?
According to the belief of this ethnic group, God made man from water and soil. They go to the lake side as a symbol of the place of origin of life. Or, the place where God made the first man. As you can see in some of those pictures the people have in their had a hand full of grass and daisies. That is to show that for the past rainy season the land has been fertile for which they give thank to God. They will place the grass and the daisies by the lake side and say their thanks giving prayer. After then the cerimony of the begins the fasitivities of the day. The rest is PARTY PARTY PARTY...
