So my current laptop is ancient and having a hard time meeting the demands of all the latest software and web apps. Yesterday the poor thing ground itself to a halt just having Lightroom and Chrome open at the same time. Forget about using Spotify or iTunes while editing or surfing. It's been such a PITA that I haven't processed much of what I've been shooting lately. There is a replacement on the way, but it won't be here for about 10 days or so. Hopefully then I can participate more, but for now I'm basically uploading to my hard drive and calling it a day.

Oh and it's sort of surprising and icky that Steve Jobs is now absent from the technology firmament. His vision and purpose have helped us tremendously even if you're not a Mac user (I only have an iPod, but for that alone I'm thankful he ran Apple for as long as he did). I didn't post this to eulogize him exactly, but I wonder who can take his place.

So what have you ordered to get you back up to speed? And why?

I got my first Dell. An Inspiron 17 something or other Gen 2. It should work really well. got it because Laptop magazine says Dell's doing well tech support wise and it was a pretty decent deal. I've always been an HP/Compaq sort of person so I hope I didn't make a mistake.

There is also Sager Notebooks. 17" between $1000 and $1500 (http://sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=category_browse&selected_cat=8) and you can customize them even more than the stock versions.

Congrats on your new purchase.

I think going with Dell might have been a wise decision. HP recently announced that they are getting out of the PC/Laptop business. Mind you this may go the way of the IBM to Lenovo deal which has been quite successful. At work we ordered laptops from an HP reseller at the end of July and HP has yet to supply. They have already missed 3 delivery dates and no ETA yet is sight. So maybe their decision has already had an effect. HP has fired their CEO and hired a new one so perhaps this decision will be revisited. In the meantime I would stay away from HP until their direction is more clear.

yep, that went into it as well. I was in the technology reseller channel for 17 years and so that is worrying. HP is normally reliable as hell and hopefully they can launch another Lenovo.
