Marko,

I know most users have Flickr and Photobucket, but how about creating a board where members can build their gallery of images they want to display, like I already did with my Beginner Gallery (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f11/my-beginner-gallery-my-favorite-shots-my-short-career-16490.html) thread I had started.

This would allow members to display the images they want people to see without going through their Flickr accts

Actually this is built into the board in a basic way.

Click My Profile at top of page then click Albums from sidebar at left - now you can create an album (s) to feature the best work, work on a specific theme etc.

Hope it may help - thx- Marko

Just some feedback.
I know a year or so ago there were some improvements made to the quality of images shared from the website rather than say flickr or picasa, but to be honest I can pick with 95% accuracy pics shared from the website because they generally lack sharpness. I find it hard to comment, because it is hard to know if it is poor shooting for processing, or just the issues caused at website upload/dispay.

I'll have to look into this - thanks for the comment.
There will always be a member or two (likely a new member) that will post an image that's too large.

This happens if the width exceeds 1026 pixels or 275k. I keep raising these limits but whenever i do there's always someone that exceeds the limit occasionally.... To protect load times and server speed, there must be a limit....though I can still raise it a bit.

sorry for the hassle.

Gonna test this again though right here in this thread.
Thx - M

test image 1026 pixels wide just under 260k - there is no compression here - this puppy is sharp. (Nothing was done to this and subsequent raw images except resize and save for web. This image was not sharpened. Image shot at ISO 2000 f/8 1/50 focal length 150mm)

HERE IS THE SAME IMAGE AT 1030 PIXELS but under 275k - this image is compressed and not sharp because it is too wide (exceeds 1026 pixels in width).

This image is 1026 pixels wide but uploaded at 281k - the image is compressed and not sharp because it exceeds 275k

If members feel these limitations are too strict I can raise then a bit more.
Thx!

To summarize, images uploaded directly to this forum will NEVER lose sharpness or be compressed if they are;

1 - Smaller than 1027 pixels wide
2 - Less than 276k in filesize

These limits can be adjusted if members feel they are too low.

Thanks!

Thanks Marko.

I can definitely see the difference.

You are probably right about new members etc. Most experienced users are using an external service.

Is there a warning when a user tries to upload too large a file?
