I bought myself a 50mm f/1.8 just in time for some Christmas shots with my two favourite models.

It's the first time I've been happy with the results shooting portraits. Part of it is the the lens, but I also played with the lighting...having my speedlight off to the side and firing it remotely.

Feedback is always appreciated!

Love the 50mm f1.8. Reasonably inexpensive but it's the best freakin' lens to have in your bag. The trick now is to realize that it's really good at f-stops other than f1.8 ;) Nice set here, Greg. Looks like the focus is off a bit on the second shot but the other two look awesome. The problem with f1.8 is that the DOF is so narrow that unless you are bang on it looks not so great. Try it at f4 and I think you'll still be quite happy with the results. Remote flash makes a huge difference too. Keep up the good work! :)

Some nice portraits here, can't really add much on what Iggy has already said.

Thanks Iggy & Richard. I didn't notice the focus in the second one until I had it on the computer. It's pretty hard to get a five year old to sit still!

Hehehehe... that's why F4 is a little more friendly :)

Iggy - I agree with what you said, I also would like to add that when using a flash or even ambient light, be careful of shadowing between two people. Also, flash in eyeglasses is a point to think about as well.

Thanks Susan. I'll see if i can clone out the reflections in her glasses.

They are gorgeous models indeed Greg. I love the bokeh that has created those awesome circles out of the lights!
