I think I should have used a flash to the left and used a faster shutter speed to reduce some of the bright highlights. What do you guys think?

Lovely expression and autumn tones.. A good old white or gold reflector would probably do well here as well, sometimes balancing in a flash can be hard work when photographing kids...

Thanks for the tip Richard. I do have a reflector but didn't think of using it outside. I usually use it to bounce the flash or sunlight through a window when I am at home.

Now that I am looking at the light on the side of her face it makes me wonder if there is there a general rule of how to position the subject in relation to the sunlight? Should the light land more on the front of her face?
