Selling photos.

Sometime in the not too distant future I would like to start selling my photos. I found a place in the art district of OKC, and it's a photography gallery. Local photographers can sell their photos at their gallery and the gallery takes 40%, so you would get 60% of the sales. I think this would be a good way to get my photos seen, and make a few extra bucks on the side.

What I would like to know is if anyone has any experience with this. If so does this sort of thing work out good, or is it a bad idea?

Then there is the other question. Are my photos good enough to sell or do I need to take better photos? Judging by what I post on the forum, what are your thoughts? If you could I would like an honest critique, I wont get offended if I get a brutal critique. If you need examples you can visit my flickr page.

All this is coming from a beginner, so I have no clue what I'm talking about. But....

I took a look at your photostream. While the shots are very nice and technically done well. I'm not sure that they are the type of shots that I would want to display in MY home. Also it is tough to get an idea with only 12 shots to look at.

If I was buying photography, I would probably lean towards landscapes, maybe local shots. Thats is for me personally. In our home the only pictures we have hanging (so far) are portraits of our family. All the other art are painting. As I progress, I'm hoping to create something that is hangable.

Sorry if this is coming out harsh, that is not my intention. I think the shots are great!

I have to say i agree w/Bucky here. Your images are interesting and appeal to me but they are not conventional, and you will have a hard time selling them if I had to bet.

Much of my own work is very 'out there' as well, and out there shots are hard to sell. Just being brutally honest as requested.

Another bit of advice, when you are ready to sell, have the images you want to sell be related to one another. Random unrelated sets of images are harder to sell.

Appreciate everyone's comments. I appreciate the honesty, because it really helps, and what y'all are saying does make sense. Most people would appreciate the conventional photos before they would weird photos. I need to practice in all areas anyway, just gives me some goals to meet. Thanks everyone!

OP, sure go ahead. The % split is excellent. Big galleries sometime charge a lot more. If they will take your work, hang it.

I'd buy your shed and starburst head, if I bought prints.

PS: To original poster, yes take the money...any bricks and mortar business is good these days, I've sold some clip art to websites, they give you pennies...
