I know nothing about photography, but I just found this shot from about 5 years ago in my picture folder, and for some reason it stirred my soul...is that a good shot or not?

NOthing was planned on this shot, I was probably half drunk and have no idea where I even got the camera to take this, or what what used ...I suspect a Canon A40 or a cheap cell phone...not sure !

Cheers!16707

This was taken in Thailand, I think in SriRacha or Satahip

The tree is TOO centered and the image is under exposed in the foreground due to the hard sun light. The ocean is way too off level. I know you wanted the tree level but ocean flows to the left. The image is also a little out of focus.

I don't normally offer critique on photos outside of the critique forum, but I will say this. The top of my desk is now covered in sea water.

Hi Everybody!

I have no idea, but glad to hear from pros.

I didn't plan anything, just shot it years ago. That was probably with a Canon a40 2 megapixels, don't remember , I just bought a Canon A810 with 16 megapixels, so that might help!

Like i said, welcome to the forum. I am by far a pro, I am not even a novice. The biggest flaw in the image is the water (horizon) being way off level. Stick around, little tips like this are what you will pick up on fast.

Cool thing about this photo is the illusion that the tree is growing out of the sea, which cannot be. So the sun is behind you casting a shadow onto the water and up into the sky, while the overhanging branches are in the frame. It is an interesting perspective. If the picture stirred your soul, perhaps it's because you have some great memories from the occasion. Welcome to the forum. Perhaps you'll share more.

Hope I didn't come off as a smart a$$. Was just having a little fun. A lot of people will tell you that it's not the camera, but the eyes behind it instead. Hang around for a while and pour over some of the old threads for tips on technique. And above all else, spend some time listening to Marko's podcast. They'll help you get there faster than just about anything else I can think of.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome Vincent!
I can see why you like the image. Dramatic light.
The image violates quite a few basic exposure rules and compositional rules as already mentioned...
If you are interested in improving your photography - hang out a bit, post some stuff, ask some questions, go back out and shoot....that's how we all get better.
