Day three of our Hawaii visit we went to Mauna Kea Volcano. This one is dormant. There are five volcanoes on Hawaii, one is extinct, three are dormant, and one is active. So I chose to go onto the (almost) top of a dormant one. At 9000 feet altitude there is a visitor center, and a vast array of signs urging you not to proceed any further up the mountain unless you have a four wheel drive vehicle. Something about temperature changing and any clouds making the roads slippery and into a skating rink. I suppose Hawaiians should come to Canada and drive through the Rockies, then they would not soil their pants at a little snow and ice. So the big honking moountain in the center of the image is Mauna Kea, at an elevation of over 14,000 feet. YOu can see the visitor center along the road. There are some people hiking somewhere in the image, that will give you a sense of scale ...

This is a panorama shot @ 9000 feet elevation. I wanted to go to the top of Mauna Kea, but our car rental agreement said otherwise. Usually this does not necessarily stop me, but wifey insisted. So I made her wait for the panorama longer than she wanted to. I have reduced the size of the panorama from 43860 x 4298 pixels to just under 25000 pixels width. This panorama is 360 degrees and consists of 56 images. As per usual: if you want to see the full size one, click on the image.

WOW! Until you see this in its full size it is just a very nice pic. When I opened this pano on Flick'r, it is so amazing. so much depth here, and so much detail Matt. Love it.

What she said! Very, very cool when viewed large... reminds me of the gigapixel shots where you can zoom in and see all kinds of details here and there. Excellent!

Really nice Pano. I looked at the Flickr image, beautiful detail throughout. I'm not so sure I would want to live in the village though I'm a coastal man myself. I need to breath the sea air :-)
