I finished up on the last job of our spring season this past monday, so now I'm pretty much off for the rest of the summer. Working twelve hours a day, seven days a week doesn't leave much time for anything that resembles a life. The couple of shots I'm going to share now along with the shot of Natural Bridge in Virginia that I got back in March are all I've done in what seems like forever. They just keep sending us places where there isn't very much to shoot even if the time to do it was there.

Anyway, the last job of the season was in Selma, AL and along the way we had a few problems with the machine that lent an opportunity of a few days off here and there. I did some 'sploring and found an old blast furnace from the late 1800's that still stands practically intact. What an amazing place! Anywhere you point you're lens there's something to work with. I've never seen such a combination of both softness and detail. I'll use some of what I got in the three of so visits I made over the past month, but expect to get the really good stuff in the fall/winter when the light will be better. Can't wait to get back.

Here's one that shows how soft steel can be. There's no way I could throw away these wonderful tones in a B&W conversion. There is a tiny bit of Orton, but only a tiny bit to darken things up a tad. Pretty much the colors you'd see if you were standing there at the same time of day I was.

There's a B&W piece over here (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/black-white-monochrome-monotone-photography-forum/20461-pig-iron.html#post143527) that shows how I would like to finish a folio of sorts. There's enough there to do just about anything you could want, so I expect I'll have something in both color and B&W in the end.
