Went and did some more night shooting tonight. How do I avoid the star burst from street lights? I do have a filter in this lens.

To avoid the stars you need to open up your aperature. The starburst are caused by your aperature blades when they're closed down to usually f16 or smaller. Also you have 14 point stars meaning you have 7 aperature blades, I think 6 gets you 6 point and 8 gets you 8 point stars, not sure. Cool shots though, and I usually don't mind the starburst, sometimes they add to the picture.

Fun play.
YUp Realist is correct - remove the filter (UV I'm guessing) as well.

When I saw your first photo I thought you did it for the second level assignment..:) These are nice. BTW, how did you manage to make the sky so Black? No stars, street light and other interferences? Or is that part of your post processing?

These were shot in the city, so the stars were not very visible (I did try to capture the 1/4 moon that night in the Tower shot, but it was blown out). I just simply used the adjustment brush and turn down the exposure and paint the sky about 5 times to rid it of any noise, especially the ones with neon lights, they had a lot of color noise.

Actually, in the shot of The Chimes, the pole for the traffic signal continued to near the top of the frame and had two street lights on top. I did a spot clone to remove it and just made it look like it ended where it did.

(I actually didn't think about the monthly assignment)

Nicely done A.T. For the "chimes" I prefer the non HDR one. It has a little more realistic look to it in my opinion. One really small nit pic .... when you cloned out the top of the pole you didn't get a nice clean straight across cut. But I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't have mentioned it.

I know technically, the non-HDR version is much better because of the over the top sharpening, clarity, etc, but you have to know and see the place in person to understand that the HDR version captures the place perfectly because of all the beer neons, sign neons, etc.

In print, it is amazing!!!! 100x better than what you see here.

The place that printed it and the place that frames it for me were just going crazy over it. The place that printed it (a camera and print shop, not Wal-Greens), said they had it out looking at it before putting it in the pick up bin. They were wondering who shot it. They know me by face but not by name (yet).

The light pole is actually pretty flat across the top, but because of the shadow, it looks funny. I didn't want to try and make it too obvious.

Very nicely done AT. Love the hdr image of "The Chimes". Really adds texture and character to the scene captured.
