Hi members,

Anyone have suggestions for this month's regular and level 2 assignments?

Thx!

How about a theme subject? I am thinking "Wire". That has a pretty broad range

Unashamedly taken from the iconic movie (The sound of Music), what about "My Favourite Things"? Members could take shots of things they are personally passionate about. It could be a hobby, sport or pastime, a treasured object, favourite food etc. I would suggest NOT family, pets or photography. I think we may get quite a wide variety of creative shots and we may also get some insight into our fellow members of the forum

Sorry, not feeling those two at all. I went back the last few years of assignments and I see that we've never done "Food" (unless I missed it). What's everyone think of that one?

And then for a level 2 how about we really throw out a challenge and do something like hadouken or levitation. Here are examples of both from Digital Rev:

How to do "Hadouken" Photography - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paqe3pQIiv0) (Hadouken)

How to do Levitation Photography - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaSH0d60Zso) (Levitation)

We did food earlier this year (February). I dont mind if my other idea is rejected, just throwing it out there.

As you dont like the other idea what about shooting into the light (including backlighting).

I had seen those levitation videos before and wondered about giving them a go, so the leviation idea works for me

I'd rather not give input this month (unless I have to break a tie or something )and just choose whatever the majority suggests.
Right now there's no consensus so we could use a few more posts.

(In my experience though, the more precise the topic the fewer posts we get)

Thx!

I'm liking Runmonty's "My favorite things", but with a slight change. Instead of shooting your favorite things, how about shooting something mentioned in the song? That has everything from an angry dog, bees, depression (or Blues). I could post the lyrics to the song here.

Here are the lyrics.

My Favorite Things Lyrics

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

I am really digging Iggy's level 2 suggestion of levitation and Hadouken

Just my votes, we need others to vote in too. I'm happy to be voted out if that's the case. And you were quite right, Runmonty, we did food in February in the level 2 assignment. Inquiring minds had to know so I went back and created a Google spreadsheet. If I set the security right, anyone should be able to view the following link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqNsgssWfF8OdFF4elBfdUNFb2VDSHBRdl9uY191Z EE&usp=sharing

Marko, I understand where you are coming from. I want everyone to participate but after 4 years I find it hard to come up with something new :)

Another idea (I think I've recommended before) is recreating (or re-interprutation) of a famous photograph. I tried one some time ago with my youngest daughter. We tried to recreate "Breakfast at Tiffany's" photo of Aubry Hepburn.

so far just 3 members posted with no clear winning theme....

Long weekend and sunny skies means no one is on the forum ;)

I'm cool with recreating a famous shot. That sounds interesting.

still looking for a few more input here...thx!

I did like the levitation/hadouken idea once I watched those crazy videos. I'm on a trip right now in Florida and just saw a wonderful sunset. While at the Houston airport I tried to suggest themes of flight and summer but my message didn't make it onto the board for some reason. Such is life travelling in the summer using airport wifi.

There does seem to be some interest in Levitation/ Hadouken.

I am good with "flight" as well. Lots of opportunity for varied interpretation there.

"Summer" is the wrong time for me, but don't let that stop everyone else. Besides our winters are probably like your summers anyway :), so I am sure I could come up with something.

My personal feeling is that the "Levitation/ Hadouken" and "Recreating a famous photo" could be tough to have both in the same month. I think both are level 2 type assignments. Perhaps that idea be carried over until next month's level 2???

Anyone else??

I agree. For level one, what about the opposite of the 'Pet's perspective - low angle shots' from a few months ago and do a high perspective shots assignment?

I agree with RM that these 3 suggestions are 'level 2'
""Levitation/ Hadouken" and "Recreating a famous photo" could be tough to have both in the same month. I think both are level 2 type assignments."

My favourite things has some support so let's go with that for the regular assignment.

So let's choose hadouken (basically pantomiming an action shot) for level 2 this month.

Thx!

Suggestion posts have been merged and the regular assignment is "My favourite things" and should be posted in this thread.

I like to keep things more general (because it increases the amount of posts) so I don't want to put major restrictions on the theme - but I do agree with RM's suggestion of not shooting kids, pets or family if possible.

The level 2 assignment is here (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/level-2-photography-assignments/).

Ok then who will post first?

Here's one to kick things off.

I am lucky enough to live just an hour or so away from 3 of Australia's premier wine districts (Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale & Clare Valley). This is fortunate as wine is one of my favourite things

This is sample from my cellar.

Nice one BF!

Look down 6-8 inches and slightly to the right and tell me if you see the same thing. If you do, then I'll wager it's one of your favs, too. :highfive:

One of my favorite thing is food, good, tasteful, creative food.
And here is a shot of something that I tried and come back for more (hope you will like it):

Been waiting for this one. I actually had you and the tigers in mind when I made this suggestion. Stayed tuned for my "Adelaide Crows" shot.

There's something wrong with it. I've never been able to get it to play a damn thing. Still...one of my favorite things.

Pittsburgh, my hometown. Made it back there for a couple of hours earlier this month before catching a flight. First time I had been back in three years. Had lunch with two of my oldest and best friends. My son got to see where I came from and best of all, he got to ride the Monongahela Incline (which is where I took this shot from).

Here's mine: S'mores. Not so much for the treat itself but the time with family outside enjoying our brief Canadian summer

Australian Rules Football.

For those of you north of the equator, this is the major sport played in southern Australia. I played a lot when I was younger and now support my son in his junior football. Our winter months are all consumed with the game, either with my sons games or attending professional level games. I am a member of the Adelaide Crows. The game is certainly one of my favourite things. Here are a few shots from the last 2 weeks of my son's games.

Wonderful action shots, Runmonty. Very "Heisman" like pose in that third one.

It is also an experiment as it was taken at ISO 3200, f2.8, 1/200 sec. with the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 (no VR)

Nah- that's for wimps. It is always a source of delight for us when we hear comments about our game from those who are used to American football with all of its protective equipment. Here is a recent ad for the game https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=lSTVgeQQ0Iw

Also I forgot to say earlier. I thought my guitar was broken as well, but my son seems to know how to operate it

Thanks BF. Nah- that's for wimps.

Oh, no! Did he say "wimps"? :headslap: Maybe you've seen this hit from one of the bowl games this past year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENuZHnQlqX0). Can't imagine anyone wanting to play against that guy without full body armor. Our college season begins this coming Saturday and we'll open with the Georgia Bulldogs. They're one of the toughest teams in the nation and I'm a little worried of the outcome.

My Trusty Zippo. Pulled it out of my pocket today and realized I'm NEVER without it, so it must be one of my favorite things.
