I was just thinking earlier tonight (actually Lovin wanting to add a photo into the 'Your City or Town at Night' thread got me onto this idea) about an online map that members can visit and place a marker for themselves on their location.

I've looked at Google maps and started a test map to see how it works. Seems simple enough ... we invite members to join and the members drag a placemarker to their locality. Clicking on the marker then opens a box where they can place a photo and some info about themselves.
End result ... we can see where everyone is more or less.

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like ...
Edited by Marko Admin - Here's another link to the ACTUAL and Real Photography.ca community (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=114236758401565441689.000463c0bea7a78e57c18) map

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u104/Mad-Aussie/09%20photographyca/phca-test-screenshot.jpg

As you can see ... we get a list to the left of all the members names as well.

Perhaps someone knows a better system for this?

Perhaps this isn't something wanted here?

Ideas???

You ride bike too ;)

I think it's a neat idea..if you want to do it you can if not you don't....

Sounds fun to me though I don't think there's any other reasonable solution other than Google maps. At least it's the most popular! ;)

Having never used google, its kind of weird to see your house from the street at any angle you wish. Makes you wonder what else they can do with those satellites, probably better off not knowing. haha, well, my place marker is up, on the complete opposite side of the world from MA. This sounds like fun.

Well if everyone likes it and Marko's good with it then we can go ahead I guess.

However, this test one I set up (and invited JJ and TT) to put markers onto will have to be scrapped as I'm the owner of it as far as Google is concerned. It would obviously be best for marko to be the owner so he'll have to set it up.
That's easy to do anyhow but it's a manual invite system so I guess we'd have to ask him to invite us and provide our email addresses so that he can. After the initial novelty wears off it should only be work for Marko as new people join and ask to be able to place a marker.

Not all the cities have "StreetView". Those were actually done by trucks with camera's mounted on the roof. They drove all over the larger cities and recorded GPS along with the photos and then pushed it all into the database. Still, it's very cool.

I'm absolutely game here and think it's neat idea:goodvibes:highfive:

Can you just provide me with a link to get started - or guide me to the starting point?

many thx!

Simple Marko.

Go to Google.com then click on the 'maps' link up in the top left corner.

Then you can see another link 'My Maps' so click that.

Now click 'Create New Map' and some fields open for you to name the map etc.

I chose Unlisted so it was private for only those invited from this forum.

Once you have created the map simply click the Edit button if the extra 4 Icons (including the blue upside down teardrop) aren't visible.

You drag that teardrop to your location (I suggest that no one actually sticks it right on their house for privacy reasons of course) or thereabouts. Then you can add some info into the little box this creates.
I simply put 'Steve 25 Hansome as a Greek God' in there ;) Ok ... I didn't ... I put 'Steve, Male, 43 Born NZ' (New Zealand) and then added a photo.

Suggest the photo is no bigger than about 300 pixels on it's longest length.

Then to invite people you simply click ther 'COllaborate' button and add peoples email addresses and they'll get the invite to join. They simply follow the instructions above from where I said 'Drag the Teardrop ..."

Now you May need to make the map editable by all as TT is having trouble using my test version but JJ didnot so we'll see. I didn't select this option as I didn't want anyone screwing with the map but perhaps as it's invite only it will be safe.

tt ... when you look at the page if you do not see 4 icons at the top left of the map next to the circular toggle icon thingy ma-jig then you see if you can see 'EDIT' written next to 'Collaborate'. If so ... try clicking the Edit to see if those icons appear.

Mad Aussie

I think we finally got tt in to the test map but I had to select 'anyone can edit' option which really does leave the map open to people being malicious. As it's only invite only (doesn't show in any lists or searches) then only PH.ca members could get in. But now any of them could change the title or description etc.

We'll have to look at other options of maps IF any exist that do this or simply trust the members to not touch the stuff they shouldn't.

Mad Aussie

02-24-2009, 08:12 AM
The "drag a blue button" can be a little tricky. You actually just click on the blue button which let's your cursor "pick it up". Then you move to your location and click to put it down. If you put it in the wrong spot you can then do a regular drag operation (press mouse button down to hold while you move the blue button and release the mouse button when you get it where you want it).

After you are all done don't forget to Save your changes.

So I see! Aren't you somewhere near where the Titanic sank?

Actually, the Titanic sank in the water, I live on land ;)

Seriously, though, you are correct. The Titanic (http://titanic.gov.ns.ca/) was not far off the coast when it sank. Halifax is the final resting place for almost 300 of the Titanic's unlucky souls.

SwissAir Flight 111 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swissair_Flight_111) also occurred "just around the corner" in nearby Peggy's Cove.

And then there is the infamous Halifax explosion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Explosion). The largest man-made accidental explosion before the creation of nuclear weapons. Dishes fell of cupboard shelves some 60 miles away in Truro.

kat
02-24-2009, 10:20 AM
Between Halifax and the where the Titanic ship sank is Sable Island...if I could ever get back there with a camera I would be in heaven!!!! All shots I got are horrible.. :(

I really enjoyed Halifax. I was there for a couple of months and it is one of my top tens in Canada.

Looks like a few people may have been getting confused with the test map I made and the New OFFICIAL Photography.ca map that Marko made and owns.

So ... I just deleted my test map so only Marko's exists now.

This is the CORRECT Link now http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=114236758401565441689.000463c0bea7a78e57c18

So if you've dissappeared from the map ... well no ... you were just on the wrong one and will have go do it again sorry.

Marko ... might be prudent to start a brand new thread for this that explains it properly now with the new link. Just so a newbie that turns up in a few weeks understands. They wouldn't follow this thread very well me thinks.

I will never do that again I promise you that. That was straight for shock value. Anyways, I did put the marker directly in front of my house. I have relatively few worries in life, and exposing my place of residence is the last thing I'm worried about. Anyone can open up the phone book here and look us up if they really wanted to. Ive even had people(ladies thankfully) go as far calling me and then reciting my address, zip, phone, and then look up my driving record online and then recite that to me. I didnt even know you could do that stuff! If someone did show up i would probably invite them, especially if they knew me from photography.ca!

Marko,

I've got the directions from my place to your place. See below.

26,314 km and should take approx 56 days and 8 hours.

It says that I have 3 kayaking legs the shortest being 4436km from Hawaii to Washington state.

That's not the real problem. The problem is I don't speak or read Japanese - see the screen shot. The up side is that I could probably visit all the fellow forum members on the way.

My wife used to be a rower when she was younger, a skill we may just need.

Actually, I remember seeking a kayak which you pedal, sort of like a recumbent bike. Given our cycling background, it may be a better option - one actually had a small sail as well. Made by Hobie I think.

12 years in retail including management when I was younger ;)

So ... you want to take the whole bridge or can I interest you in a pylon or two instead? I've got some ocean front property in Arizona you might like. Got it from George Strait. If you'll buy that I'll throw the Golden Gate in free

I wonder why so many members don't go and add their place marks to the map

Are they worried we'll come around and take photos of them

No one has to, and they are encouraged not to, place their marker exactly in their street ... just their neighbourhood or even just their city/town

right on. Ive noticed the people that are consistent active members have placed themselves on the map. Just because they are members does not mean they participate. No fault to anybody, but thats just the way goes it sometimes.....

You don't see what? The map at all? Or just the new links? If it's the links then don't worry ... the ones Lovin is sprouting about aren't there yet ... he's just getting excited ;)
