Investigating the use of lines, colours, shapes and textures. Does something like this work?

Since you placed it in critique section, I guess I will give my two cents...

Technically a very nice image. The exposure and everything are nice, but it is lacking something. If you saw Run's image of the missing tile, this image is in the same category. The difference is I don't think you have enough contrast between the bricks like Run has with the missing tile. The one red brick is still tied into the others because there is touches of red in other parts of the image.

I feel in order to pull off an image like you and Run shot, the contrast has to be extreme (like Run's missing tile). I just feel that your image falls just short and is basically just a shot of a brick wall.

BTW, here is a link to Run's tile image http://www.photography.ca/Forums/architecture-man-made-cities-buildings-roads-objects-abstracts/21896-steps-aka-missing-tile.html

I had not seen Run's image until now. I do see the point you make from his example. Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback

AT gives another good critique.

For me there's not enough going on...the components you mention are good, but in this case the components are not strong (the lines, colours, shapes and textures do not dazzle) enough to carry the image....so I'm afraid I agree with AT - Just a shot of a brick wall.

In addition, watch the edges. Edges (of the brick) near the actual edge of the image distract.
Hope that may help!
