View Full Version : Challenge to all members - Doors

There hasn't been a challenge for a while, so I thought I would kick off 2017 with a challenge to all members.

The challenge is to post one only photo of a door each week. For those of you that have been around the forum for a while, yes this is inspired by my http://www.photography.ca/Forums/general-photography/19778-windows-project.html

To encourage us to get out and shoot, it would be ideal if the photo was taken the week it is posted, but if you are unable to take a photo of a door that week, don't get too fussed, just choose another you have taken for this project.

The photo may have the door as the main subject or may be incidental to the main subject matter. It may be the whole door, or a detail within the door. It may be post-processed a little or lot. Be as creative as you like. The only rule is that it must include a door of some description.

If you don't see this thread immediately, don't worry, feel free to join in at any time.

OK - Who will join me?

Not shot today, but last week in New Orleans. I had originally passed on post processing it because it lacks interest

Come to think of it, I was wondering why I took this shot, so didn't process it until AT jogged my memory. Strange coincidences. Kodak TMax 400 film on a Canon EOS 10s using a Canon 35 mm F/2 lens. Developed in XTOL stock.

Really like the shallow DOF and colour in yours AT

MB - I do admire your commitment to film. This subject suits it well.

Thanks Runmonty! I discovered Photography.ca the other day and added it to my list of favorite forums on my website.

Please do. It isn't the largest forum on the web, but is in my opinion the best and friendliest by far. There are photographers of all levels and abilities who are always willing to help.

OK, you've inspired me to pp another shot from yesterday, in which there is a doorway visible. Barely!

This was a bit of a grab shot as I walked by, since I didn't want to upset the dog walkers by aiming a camera at them.

Nevertheless, I still like the overall composition, and the dog walkers balance each other out.

Location: Claremont Colleges, Claremont CA. My wife was recently watching the Gilmour Girls on Netflix and when they visited "Yale", it was filmed on this lawn.

I was shooting from Stover Walk (top to bottom of the satellite view) with the Little Bridges auditorium in the background.

Glad I got out yesterday; it's raining today.

Do you have to open that door or can you dive right in?

That's a great shot.

Thanks Marko! I'm learning lately that artsy is hit-or-miss... Would make a good discussion. might also make a good podcast....hmmmm

For me.... 'artsy' or rather Good artsy - is not hit or miss....it's the product of practise. Practise/study more....and you'll get artsier photos that aren't crap. :)
The same rule applies to regular photography as well. When too much post-processing happens it's not a photo for me anymore, it's mixed media. Your shot 2 falls into this category for me. (JMO though)

While keeping Marko's comments in mind (controlling post processing so as not to cross into mixed media territory), here are a couple more doors.

The first I chose to render in B&W to accentuate the strong shadows. The second (from a Rose Parade float) is only minimally processed to balance it out.

Both nice shots and interesting doors Plugsn

Just an observation and I dont want to be too draconian here, but the idea is to post one only photo a week. My thinking behind this is to build discipline in editing. By editing I dont mean processing the photos, but rather the self critiquing, identification and selection of photos. It is surprising how hard this can be. A while ago I identified this as a major theme of Ibarionex Perello from "A Candid Frame", and since then I have tried to improve this myself. IMO it is a valuable skill to actively learn.

Having said that, you do what you want here. I really dont want to be a "photo Nazi" - you do what works for you :)

Not a fascinating door for most, but for me it is the one I walked through 26 years and 6 months ago when I got married. :D

well done Mbrager for keeping this thread alive, when it has tapered off over the past few weeks. Some interesting doors there. Love the reflection post #42.

I suspect this thread has run its course now, but if MB you wish to continue or if anyone sees an interesting door, I would still love to see it here.

Thanks to those that have participated

OK, let's keep it going!

Here's one of my favorite doorway shots, treated with a slight grunge effect. I love the old worn sign.

And here's how the door looks now, from Google street views. Blah.
