Port Noarlunga Jetty

Over the past week, we have had several consecutive days of temperatures around 45 degrees Celsius (approx 113 Fahrenheit) . During that time we have also had some some devastating bush-fires. Over 80 homes have been destroyed, along with several hundred other buildings and vehicles, and unfortunately also loss of life. Not a nice way to celebrate Christmas.

Our city has been shrouded in smoke for the past few days, but today the smoke has lifted. I expected that the remaining smoke in the atmosphere may result in a pretty funky sunset, so I got myself along to the beach to get a couple of shots.

The 1st photo is a 4 minute exposure with a ND filter just after sunset

Sorry for all the fire trouble - hard to think of something good to say except glad you are safe!

I really like this set - normally I gravitate toward long exposure, but here in shot 1, it's not adding to the scene imo. The hard critique here is that 60% of the image has nothing too interesting going on...and so it's my least favourite shot of the set.
Shot 2 with its less long exposure, is more interesting to my eye than shot one because we see the story and the foreground is less amorphous. (shot 1 screams for a boat or something.. shot 2 doesn't need it)
Shot 3 takes/wins the set for me. The long exposure in this has much more going on. It feels more thoughtful and deliberate. I dig the exposure, clarity, colour palette and overall comp.

I think I got caught up in the novelty of long exposure, in trying to increase variety of shots i take of our coastline.

Upon reflection I also think there is ab it of a colour cast from the ND filter that I haven't properly corrected

i agree with marko, normally the long exposure would appeal most to me, but not in this case. the third is also my favorite of the bunch, but the second one is pretty strong too.

I think I may have been too square on for the first shot, making it a bit more boring than the other two where I was closer to the jetty, making them a bit more dramatic and emphasising the receding lines

you're probably right about that assessment. the jetty in the first one seems to stretch on forever. it seems a lot shorter and more interesting in the second two.
