Massive Flood in Calgary 2005 vs 2009

I took some shots the other day of the bridge over the Elbow River to compare it with the exact same shots at the height of the 2005 flood. The first is what it looked like last week (March 2009) the second is the same shot in 2005.
I borrowed the idea from JJ and his recent flooding series...figured I'd share what happened here 4 years ago! I'm sure many of you Albertans remember!

The last shot I found rather amusing with all that was going on around him and that river a block away...the last thing I'd be thinking is to make sure the grass is done? :confused:

Thanks for sharing Casil. Its amazing to look at pictures like this. Not sure if it was the same for you, but standing next to something like this, you can almost feel the power of the moving water. It was quite humbling to see a full grown oak tree being carried down the river as if it were a toy.

I'm just south of Calgary, and it's not called High River for nuthin'. That 2005 flood taught me the value of sump pumps and wet vacs.

i was living in okotoks in the 05 flood - had to sandbag around the bank i worked at on main st (elizabeth). lucky for us we lived on the hill, so our house wasnt affected. i had some amazing video & pics from the sheep river, but sadly they disappeared somehow...
i like how youve shared the before/afters casil - nice to see the difference!

what a difference in water heights. There is something about flooding that just is mind boggling. I know in Australia it's been awful!

Interesting to see the differences. I heard that in the Australia flood that the flooding was occurring in an area roughly the size of British Columbia. :eek:

The Michaleaw in me says we should get used to this...climate change will be causing more and bigger floods in the near future.

Can you imagine what the Aussie's are going through right now with a flood in some spots of over 9 meters?
