I was messing around with some still lifes last week and tried a series of shots similar to this. The lighting wasn't perfect, and trying to get a shot that wasn't ruined by flash took some experimentation.

These are actually green coffee beans which I grew myself. I can tell you getting from the coffee berry to the ground roasted coffee is a lot of work. I guess that is why its sooo expensive.

An interesting shot for sure and I like it except for that black thing at the left and the spot of 'specularish' light above the black thing. For me that black thing is too undefined and takes up too much of the picture. The shot would have been stronger without it imo.

Now for the teaching part....

What is the silver thing in the middle and what is the black thing?

Thanks!

Someone who doesn't drink espresso obviously ;)

That looks like a vintage and/or well worn machine...or parts thereof I should say....I have a little Krupps machine that was sitting around for years collecting dust, and we've just rediscovered how incredible espresso/cappucino is compared to regular coffeemaker stuff. Kind of a pain to clean everything though from one cup to the next....
I really like the photo, looks like it could be hanging on a coffee house wall, something about the colour makes me want the beans to be darker though and I guess that would be fairly easy to adjust in post processing if you wanted to.

To be honest, I'm not fond of this image. I understand the connection between coffee and the sepia-esque treatment, but it doesn't work for me. Additionally, there are too many dark and softly focused areas. Just my $00.02 worth - your mileage may vary.

The silver thing is what holds the coffee grinds. Its called a porter filter(I had to look that up). The black thing is the handle. The white in the background is a plate I placed the beans on. There were only just enough to cover the front of the plate.

The beans are green(before roasting). Maybe a better photo would be some green, some roasted and some gound beans?
