View Full Version : April 2009 Photography Assignment - Portraits (human)

Anyone have any suggestions for April? Everyone did such an awesome job with March and Wind!

To me the obvious might be "Easter/Passover" but "April Showers" was something I was thinking also.... "Spring" is another thought I had in mind.

Anyone else?

what about portraits?

what about portraits?

I'd love to see how everyone does with this one!

 I've never attempted a portrait...hence the reason it might be a good idea!

Just wanted to pop in and say that I love portraits! I might even attempt the assignment this month :p ....After finals and all :(

Back to studying for me :( (ssaavvee meee!)

I like the portraits idea as it would give me an excuse to practice more in this area.

Trying to get some today of my kids for Easter, not working out too well. Funny how much easier it is to photography children besides your own..grrrr! :)

Sold - posts will be merged and portraits it is.
Who is posting first?

Alright..guess I'll get it started. I know this is going to be such a good theme!!! :highfive:

I will most likely add to this once Easter and a newborn arrive! Going to be a fun month for portrait taking for me..lots of firsts!

I chose this photo because this face is what you get when she gets excited over something, like her Cinderella getting her ballgown or kiss from her Prince. A face I think she will lose with time but loved always. :D

Very cute photo! Her eyes are gorgeous. The only thing that bothers me is that stray hair in her right eye. I just have this need to move it away. :)

Here is a photo I took of my friend Roger in the fall. I actually want to convince him to come for some available light portraits as I need the practice and he does not run away from the camera. I took this as we were sitting in a window at a restaurant. Not sure the desaturated treatment works but thought I would give it a shot. :)

is any photo of a human eligible as a portrait, or is this assignment mainly focusing on traditional style portraits?

Not at all ... the main requirement is that you take a new portrait for the assignment and not dig up an old one. The idea is that each month those participating actually go out and take something specifically for the assignment.

I don't think marko is even stipulating human at all but I think it is what he meant more than animals. Keep it tasteful and I think anything goes really.

Actually I was indeed thinking human portrait. Since no-one posted anything different yet, let's keep the portraits human please.
Many thanks!

Took this photo of my son with grandma & grandma while watching hockey...the camera is one of few things that can distract him from the game lol...it's not your 'standard' portrait i guess but it captured an honest emotion in each person that i fell i love with...

Cute kid-shot lily and I am a fan of grain.

jello - I like this shot. I may have cropped it differently in camera though to reduce distractions and maybe focus more on just the face with veils. JMO.

Good stuff so far everyone....I'm still trying to find a subject. Right now I've almost convinced my lens-hood-fishing spouse to don his biker duds and pose on the H-D but we haven't got that far yet. Hopefully this weekend maybe, possibly!

jello - I like this shot. I may have cropped it differently in camera though to reduce distractions and maybe focus more on just the face with veils. JMO.

This one was tough, First I had to run with f8 on that one to keep the depth of field wide enough to catch the face and the wings in focus but of course that made the background too sharp. Then getting the flash heads set correctly so enough light passed through the wings to light the face but not to blow out the details in the wings was also hard. I couldn't light the face directly from her front because there was a wall 1 foot outside the frame on the right hand side, so I ended up running 2 flash's for the wings and face, 1 set higher than the camera set to 1/2 power and 1 almost at floor level pointing up set to 1/16 power.

This was actually a shoot at a costume party at a bar, so I had limited space. http://www.deviantdonkey.info/v1/galleries/portraits/images/20090408105120_img_4317.jpg
As you can see (Ignore my pouty wife) other than 4 feet in front of where I am shooting I was setup in a corner and about 3 inches outside of the frame were walls. I hate getting squished like that!!

I do agree though and in retrospect I should have done a few closeup shots. Not sure why I didn't other than it was probably 1:00 am by the time this one was shot. I ink this is one of those images that needs additional post work, but I didn't get paid enough to do that, so they get what they get. :evil2:

Accompanying disclaimers: I know it isn't "tack sharp" and there are "distracting background elements" (the tree that appears to be growing out of the subject's head), but I still kinda like the shot and I could not find any easy way to get rid of the tree in PS. While I was trying to get this shot, my 1 yr old daughter fell in some muck off to the side so I was rushed as usual.

Is there a limit on the number of submission in this the assignment?

I thought seeing getting a decent portrait of a single child was quite difficult, I should try 3 at once, immediately after a little chocolate fix on easter morning.:wall-an: I've got to get some software that can take the best faces from various shots and blend in to a single image, because as usual I took heaps of shots, bu none where all 3 had good smiles or were all looking at the camera.

It has become an easter tradition with my kids that the easter bunny brings them new pyjamas as we roll in to winter. So this is them trying on their new PJs. Taken under room lights plus 2 x super bright white bike lights(1 for some highlights and 1 to minimise shadow on the back wall) plus 680EX speed light for fill.

There is no limit on posting here - post away Antz

Bambi - I like the grain in this shot (bit of an odd crop tho)
Kat - I like the drama in the blond boy shot

F8 - In this case, Because the boy is in silouette, the tack sharp doesn't matter that much to me. Good eye on the tree growing out of the head (as long as you've noticed it). I love the perspective and framing here - very well done for someone 'rushing'

jventer - very, very cute shot souvenir shot. (souvenir because it's really soft)

Antz - This photo made me laugh because of the blond boy's "cheese" smile. The lighting is quite nice indeed but the cropping could be better.

Nice to see so many posts here - mine will come toward the end of the month as i am having camera issues.

In what way? I have left some more of the clothing in than I may have normally, because the PJs are what the kids are "showing off".

Marko

The blond boy (sorry I'm bad with names) has his hand cut off. You also cut off his left arm. It's just a bit too tight for me; I like the crop on your daughter's side much better.

Mixed heights are often an issue when posing. Sometimes what helps is artificially making them the same height (one sitting one standing etc)
Hope that helps - marko

This is my new little friend Maggie (and her Dad) who I met today at the Chinese Cultural Center. Maggie was very interested in my picture taking and asked if she could see what I was doing. I showed her. Then she asked if I would take a picture of her...I said yes if it was okay with her Dad.
I decided to submit this as a portrait cuz she was just too darned cute...the picture in no way does justice to her cuteness...(although she is pretty darned cute in this shot) :). She really liked her picture too btw.
Please excuse the lighting...I was a bit rushed because her Mom (in the background was waiting).

I like this one better MA - less harsh. I might dodge the eyes a wee bit more for more punch. In general, most subjects (especially female) are not fond of this type of lighting (harsh - shadowy) as it is far less flattering than soft bright light.

PHOTOGRAPHERS of course love this stuff and IMO we should use it whenever we want, we just need to know that there's a good chance our subjects won't be entirely happy with the results (or would have preferred a more flattering portrait). :twocents:

Actually it's not that hard if you choose the right subject.

In general - pretty girls are the wrong subject for this light.

Lumberjacks, coal miners, gritty guys - it's a stereotype for sure but gritty subjects are better suited to 'gritty' light and soft subjects are better suited to soft light.

Here is an upload of a quick - 2 second portrait I did at my son's wedding this past weekend. The young man is a US Marine and was a groomsman standing up for my son. I believe he said that he has served in Iraq for two tours and a tour in Afghanistan. The scar on his face is from his tour in one of those places. I tear up and have so much gratitude to those who spend their lives protecting a country they believe in. Seeing Zach was no different for me.

Crashcat ... if this is you 'learning' then most of us are in trouble! Great shot. I think I prefer the first 'still in the works' version. I didn't need the eye tack sharp in this case. For me, this is one of those rare shots (due to the treatment you have given it) that doesn't need a sharp eye.

Hi Everyone, I'm quite new to your community here and I'm still trying to find my way around your great forum. I'm really liking it so far, especially the podcasts.
Here is my contribution for April I just shot this on wednesday. I shot this using one flash and softbox at camera left. The difficult part here was black hair on a black background without a hair or separation light. I was able to fix this by using the Shadow/Highlight feature in Photoshop. Then I adjusted the tone and colour using Curves. I would love to hear your thoughts and comments! It's really great to be a part of your community!

In terms of comments - I like the pose here, the sharp eyes, yup - the separation of hair to background, the funky treatment... what I'm not crazy about is the hand which i find to be a distraction. Your play with the tones works with the look of this model but I'm finding parts of the image (the hand in particular, and part of the forehead) just a bit too red for my taste. Hope that helps and LOVE to see more shots from you.
Best - Marko

This is more of a grab shot at the jazz jam today. I turned and saw them enjoying the music. Oliver is a great sax player, today he played Happy Birthday with such improvisation for one of the jammers it blew us away. This is his girlfriends daughter, just too cute.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments!

Darkness: If you're using a PC, here's one way: There is a trick I often use for bringing out the eyes a little more. It's very subtle, but it makes a great difference to a portrait. If you have Photoshop, zoom in to 100% view by pressing the CTRL and + keys together.
Select the Magic Wand tool and set the Tolerance to between 8-12. Now make the selection to the colour parts of both eyes by holding down the SHIFT key and clicking in the Iris area of the eyes until they are both selected. (You do not need to select the pupil.)(You can also use the lasso tool, but I find the Magic Wand to be faster) Next, goto IMAGE > ADJUSTMENTS > HUE/SATURATION. Goto to the Saturation slider and boost it to +20 or +25, then underneath that is the Lightness slider, boost that to +3 or +4. I wouldn't go over that amount because the eyes will start to look unnatural. After that, click OK and then click CTRL and D together to release the selection and then zoom out CTRL and - , to check the results. Hope it works for you! :-)

KAT: Your shot is awesome! Just wondering, why Manual Focus?

Yes! Finally managed to do one of these assignments! :D My friend had a bday dinner yesterday so I took the camera along in hopes of getting some usable shots.

Okay, considering this was taken in a darkened restaurant after sunset with just the pop-up flash on my canon s5, I'm just happy to get SOMETHING that's halfway decent :)

Birthday girl (lol).

A lemon..lol.

Nice photo marko. I like the outdoor reflection on the glasses but the white background. Great looking black and white.

Awesome shot Marko! Save the best for last! I love the grain and the detail.

I (quickly) extracted the bkgd from the last shot because of the lack of detail in the sky. (Yes, shame on me for leaving without my polarizer)
here's the original - comments?
thx - Marko

I actually prefer the original. Having a little bit of something in the background gives it some context.

Wow what striking eyes and butterfly lips she has.
Shot 2 is the strongest here for me based on eye sharpness, fewer distractions and a good pensive mood.

I know this thread is old, I figured nobody would really mind of I posted, this is kind of my first portraits I really did. I've always been nervous to do portraits. Not sure why but I am. I'm getting a little more comfortable now. This is only one shot of a bunch I did. They were used for an event poster for my friends Kerry (DJ Chrome) and Marc (DJ Supafly) Supafly is a local radio and nicht club DJ here in Vancouver and he's had me come down to a few events and do some shots for him for the clubs he spins at and for the radio.
