My first attempt to shoot at the beach.. The subject was back lit by the sun and I used a one light high and off to the right. I wanted to give it a little drama. Are the shadows too distracting and harsh?

Thanks for your comments !!!

I think overall it looks great. Great looking skin, hair away from the face, shadows aren't covering the eyes. It would be nice to see her whole right arm.

Does she box?

No not real boxing. She works out with the gloves in a gym though.

It's not the shadows that are distracting :)

Now you mention it ... I think the shadows are perfect. Nice use of fill flash by the looks of it. We expect to see shadows on a beach so hiding them steals realism.

I think it's excellent work and you did ok too scorpio e ;)

I agree with Kat on this, but it is still a great shot.:highfive:

As a photographer, we must learn to deal with distractions :)

I think this is a very strong first attempt!
I like it but I think there's room for improvement...
Seems to me that this is a 'glamour' type shot but only halfway. The sky is blown out which is a bit of a distraction. I would have preferred softer light with softer shadows(more fill) but that's just my taste. I see no catchlights in her eyes, that's also something to be aware of. I like the model's sexy stare, but I may have asked her to to turn her body to a more 45 degree angle.
Again, some of this is personal taste. Hope that helps - Marko

Thanks for the comments Marko:) The blown out sky bothered me too. I agree on the lighting too. I thought it was a bit harsh. It's a tough gig with bright sun and winds blowing 30 miles an hour.
Next time I will get an assistant!!!

Well, if this is your first attempt, I can't wait to see your next pictures.
What I miss here is some more space on the left side of the photo.
