Yes, we have another Nova Scotian joining the forum. I live in Halifax, and just bought my first dslr, Canon XSi. Been having a blast playing with it, and reading about slr photography here and on other sites.
My parents used to have an old film slr. I forget whether it was a Nikon or Minolta, but they had a nice collection of lenses and accessories for it. Unfortunately they pawned it for $100 off a digital camera (several years ago). I never found out about it until a few months after the fact. Had I known, I would have paid em $200 for the set; kit lens, wide angle, telephoto, large tripod, flash, remote trigger and a nice case to boot.
I used it for awhile in high school, for a photography class. Had a blast taking B&W photos, and playing around in the dark room. Unfortunately, never continued the hobby into university, but the itch was there.
Since I've finished with university and can afford it now.....well, at least the camera and a couple extra lenses, decided now was as good a time as any to get back into photography.
Expect to see a few pics from me in the future.
