Nick Ut, an Associated Press photographer, spent June 8, 1972 photographing a Vietnamese village as part of his war coverage. He was close to finishing up when two planes flying overhead released napalm bombs, destroying the village and sending burned and injured villagers running for help. Using his own Leica M2 and a 35mm Summicron lens, Ut snapped the iconic shot of 9-year-old Kim Phuc running, naked and screaming, down a road.
“Even though pictures [are taken] in every war, they still show the picture of Kim. They don't want it to happen again - not napalm,” Ut later told the BBC.
Ut, who had quickly taken the young girl and her family to a hospital, won a Pulitzer Prize for the photo.
