Sometime back I Came across the works of William Gedney while searching for images by Dorothea Lange. I was under the false impression that the most striking image I found in my search was by Lange when in fact it was a Gedney composition taken during the ‘70s in the poverty stricken regions of Kentucky. The more I looked into his work, the quicker he became one of my favorite Masters.

If you do your own research on Gedney, you’ll find that he wasn’t simply a “drive by photographer” and that he developed a long standing relationship with the people and families he encountered and chose to photograph.

The most extensive collection of his works are found on the web site of Duke University and the link below leads to his images from Kentucky during the mid ‘60’s and ‘70’s, but it’s easy enough to find your way to his work done in India, Europe, New York, and San Francisco all of which is the kind of photography that leaves a lasting impression. At least, it has for me.
