View Full Version : The one that got away
I must have seen dozens of escapee balloons at the local fair last weekend. At the time I thought they would make an interesting image, but I'm not so sure now. This image has already been cropped, but wonder if the balloon was bigger or smaller would make it more appealing?

I think your instinct is correct. I'd like to see more sky and a smaller balloon or a bigger balloon. I also think horizontal might have been better for this particular shot. Hope that helps - Marko

I think another element in the shot might have made it stronger. A plane, bird, mountain, ... swimsuit model. :)
Thanks all. I might try some other options.

Actually the balloons went so high so fast there was nothing to catch in the frame. Not even a cloud.

Maybe you should re-do the shot with a model in the picture just as she lets go of the balloon as if she's trying to grab it as it flies away! ;) A swimsuit model as dad said :p

No swimsuit models available at short notice.:D The best I could try was to make the balloon smaller in landscape.
I would have liked to have tried having the balloon about to exit the top of the image, but without going to Photoshop and adding more to the bottom of the image I couldn't. Do you thing the negative space should be above or below the balloon?

I actually like the balloon all by itself. I think it could work very well in a commercial application. the yellow/blue contrast is perfect.
However, if you are going to do the swimsuit model, here's my recommendation:

:D Seems swimwear is popular this year ;)
I think the landscape shot looks better for sure and works with all that negative space for the balloon to float through.
Whether it would be better under the balloon I guess is a matter of conjecture but I'd say it may well look even better that way ... especially with a swimsuit model of course.
