View Full Version : Newfoundland photography

So I'm finally getting to the the shots I took when I went to Newfoundland. I have loads in mixed categories, but I'd like to post them all in this one thread. First day was all about cats in St. Johns. The windows and doors are super interesting in St. John's and for some reason on this one day, many cats were loungin' by the window.

08-18-2009, 12:41 AM
Here's a shot of my wife and a really friendly cat that came to greet us.

08-18-2009, 07:36 AM
Nice set. Interesting how you were able to get a group like that. The cats must have heard you were in town and vying for an opportunity to work on their portfolios! ;)

08-18-2009, 07:48 AM
Cool set. I especilly like the cat hanging its head out the window in shot 1, and the one with your wife.

08-18-2009, 10:06 AM
Lord thunderin, didn't expect all the kitties from a newfie set! :p Where are the moose!!??

Nice! Like them all but favor the third one. Just love the eyes and that window.

Hope you had a wonderful time!

08-18-2009, 10:19 AM
Thanks all - On a second look, I think the first 3 could use a slight contrast boost as i lost some meat from raw to jpg.

It sucks but I saw no moose. I got birds comin' though..

More Newfie shots - Here's some shots from around St. Johns. First shot is taken through our screen window from the BB we stayed in.

Another set from St. John's

08-24-2009, 11:49 AM
nice series, Marko! love th color of the villi age and the patterns that you picked up on! my favorite shot is the cat behind the screen as I love the screen texture with the fur of the cat!

08-24-2009, 12:17 PM
Nice. Sure makes me want to go back for a visit!

08-24-2009, 12:39 PM
Great, colorful series. Love the old architecture especially. I like the first cat the best. His little head sticking out the window is just classic!

More Newfoundland shots

Here's a shot of St. John's in the very early morning.

Signs that make immature photographers smile...especially the first sign. For days my wife had to endure me saying in my best Newfy accent "Cheeks and tongues, get your cheeks and tongues here, fresh cheeks and tongues"

11-20-2009, 11:27 AM
Shot 1 - Dildo harbour - Shot 2 Bonavista scene - Shot 3 Bonavista dock seating. BTW - Bonavista is easily one of the most beautiful places in all of Newfoundland.

11-20-2009, 11:30 AM
Shot 1 - Last Chance number 2 (Bonavista)
Shot 2 - Really old house that needs a new paint job (Bonavista)

Dildo. Tongues. Cheeks. What kind of place IS this?? It sounds more like a nightclub than a town! :headslap:

11-20-2009, 01:02 PM
I am wondering what became of "LastChance I". Cool series, Marco. :)

Lord Thunderin! (Is that some kind of Canadian Redneck speak?) do tell!! :D

Dear lord..that is what my parents say when they are "upset"..lol.

11-20-2009, 03:31 PM
Fantastic Series Marko.
mmm....some interesting names there :)

11-20-2009, 03:47 PM
Thanks for the comments everyone!
I'm slow to process my images but there's more to come!
I'm enjoying putting these all into one huge thread - makes me remember what a beautiful province Newfoundland is!

11-20-2009, 04:21 PM
Dear lord..that is what my parents say when they are "upset"..lol.

Lord Thunderin' ended up being mine as well due to those influences. Also, from time to time, I find myself saying my mother's curse words: "Jumped up knock-kneed paratoad". I guess that was better to say around the kids then f*(}K #*(&$(&$ ;)

11-20-2009, 04:22 PM
Great set, Marko. I almost feel like I was there.

11-20-2009, 06:34 PM
Isn't it supposed to sound like "Lard tunderin' Jeeeeezuss Bye!"
That's for MA..
If you were to put in a "Newfie Speak Generator". I believe the correct English input would be "Oh my dear goodness....I can't believe it!"
Isn't there also a town called Spread Eagle?
I have a friend from Ramea too..lol :)

Great series Marko...love the colours of the houses...and the little villages!
Let's see more!! :highfive:

11-20-2009, 09:49 PM
I love how everything is so colorful, might have to plan a trip......:)

11-20-2009, 10:10 PM
Wow I missed that you even went, when did you go? Hope you had a great time I just love it out there. Wonderful photos, must have been in photography heaven there. You got some fabulous shots, some would look nice printed and framed the colours are so vibrant in some that they are stunning to look at.

11-21-2009, 12:50 PM
Wonderful series of photos, marko! Love especially the third cat behind the window and the "wooden" picture with this nice fence an its swaying line.

01-02-2010, 06:00 PM
I too favour the gulls on the cliff but the doggy in the window is also very cute and well done. :)

3 Shots from Trinity Newfoundland. What a quaint little place created by the prov. government purely for the tourists. A few hundred people live there in the summer but only around FORTY people live there during the winter.

Shot 1 - Convenience store man dressed in traditional garb
Shot 2 - Trinity house on the hill
Shot 3 - Trinity dock scene

01-03-2010, 01:00 PM
Twillingate Newfoundland - was HIGH on one of my favourite places in the whole province. It's famous for icebergs.

01-03-2010, 01:03 PM
Really nice additions to the set, Marko. :highfive: I like these very much.

Number one seems like such a comfortable pose and wonderful lighting. Number 2 reminds me of Little House on the Prairie ;) And number 3 is just a perfect example of the Maritime Provinces.

The thinking man's rock (near Twillingate)

01-03-2010, 05:04 PM
Great new additions Marko!! I want to get to NFLD in the worst way!

01-03-2010, 08:57 PM
Astounding photographs, nice clean bright shots. Very cool Marko.

01-03-2010, 09:01 PM

01-03-2010, 09:05 PM
These are awesome! Totally represent Newfoundland! There are too many to say what I like...there are many.

Wonderful set Marko..keep em coming

01-04-2010, 09:58 AM
Marko those Icebergs are awesome...love the blue colour!
And that last rock shot reminds me of Curious George...It kinda looks like him! :)

01-04-2010, 11:34 AM
All really great! The first time I saw an ice berg, I could not believe the colour of them!

01-04-2010, 04:08 PM
Looks like there is an endless menu of subjects to photograph in NFL. Can't wait to go there some day. Nice set of photos!

01-24-2010, 03:14 PM

I like both the ledge shot and the boats. The ledge shot gives the feeling of falling almost and the boats is just simply trippy!! :)

01-24-2010, 04:49 PM
that ledge shot is awesome! the lobster pot is adorable!

01-24-2010, 07:14 PM
Great stuff! Love the upside right docked boats.

01-25-2010, 06:22 AM
The boats are cool and the kid in the bucket is just cute :)

01-25-2010, 06:41 AM
That boat photo rocks and I really like the cemetery...I like how they positioned the graves to look out to see so the residents always have a view. :)

01-25-2010, 10:08 AM
Thanks for the comments everyone - much appreciated.
I'm almost done here...one or 2 more uploads and then you don't have to look at my vacation photos anymore :D

01-25-2010, 03:59 PM
Love the graveyard. We have one back there like that but more cliff. Also enjoy the boat and it's reflection. Love the colors in that shot.

02-03-2010, 05:18 PM
Another few from Newfoundland- we're close to the end now folks :D

Rock pattern2

I particularly like the abstractedness of the second photo in post #58 . It reminds me of a William Morris fabric design. The rocks and lichen in the above post are also rather cool looking abstracts.

I like Rock Pattern 1 and also the Telescope View which shows some cool thinking about the composition.

02-05-2010, 04:11 AM
very nice series of shots Marko
