Photo competitions are helpful in camera clubs or photographic associations but otherwise a lot of them are a scam to get the rights to a large number of good photos without paying what they really are worth by promising prizes which don't in any way match the cost of the photo if they had to pay for it from a pro. To put it a little differently the competition organizer may put out the equivalent cost of one good professional quality photo (in prizes) at the going rate and get 100 or more from contestants. They win big time on a cost/profit ratio but photographers as a whole lose.

watch out for picture.com - i submitted a photo of mine and got a lot of emails replying back that i was selected, then in the semi-finalists, and then i had made it to the editors choice, etc etc, and they tell you your picture will be published in a book and you can purchase it for $70, and add your self-photo and bio for $X, and theres a watch i 'won' for $X, and a pin for $X... you see where Im going with this? it says the awards are from the 'international library of photography', but most info I can find on this group is very negative. if i am wrong on this, please correct me - but i think its a scam.
