Looking to start using flash units instead of my studio strobes. Need to find out what I need to do this and how? I have one sb-600 flash unit. Can I use one of these with like two other sunpaks and a pocket wizard or is there a cheaper way that works too.. and how well has anyone had using this at nighttime events like wedding receptions, outdoor pics, etc..

DW - I run Canon, but I am sure that it is somewhat similar.

To run my ex flashes off camera - i have 2 lightstands with shoot through umbrellas and a black overlay if i want to shoot into the umbrella and bounce the flash. Canon makes a gadget that attaches to the hot shoe, which sends a laser signal to fire the flashes. if you are planning on using this as fill flash, it works great. it also works really well with the flash being the main light source, BUT you have to be careful where you position lights and use reflectors to help out with shadowing.

As far as pocket wizards go, i only use them form my studio lights, and have no experience with the pw and canon light system.

hope some of this is helpful!

You can always go cybersynch..Cheaper than PW and reliable:)
I use them all the time on my outdoor flash units.

The cheapest way is a sync wire from the camera to one flash. Then add 30 dollar peanut slaves (if the other 2 flash have no built in slaves) to each other flash.

Since I hate wires, I would not choose the route above although it works perfectly well. I use pocket wizards. Hope that helps - Marko

The SB-600 has no PC sync socket and if you are using the OLDER flashes you have to be careful about the output voltages if you are looking to use a synch cord. Peanut slaves are cheap but NOT reliable in outdoor conditions. Nightime they would probably work fine.

PWs are nice, but the price isn't for the faint of heart; I would look into a set of the latest Cactus Triggers. They've had some major improvements and are getting decent reviews.

i've had good success with the wein peanut slave outdoors on a bunch of occasions....but it's a pain compared to triggering devices.
The cactus seems like a bargain actually,... though I've never used one.

Out of curiosity, what studio strobes do you use? what do you like/dislike about them? have you considered using a Vagabond or another inverter to use them in the field?
