My first post for critique

Hi

Having joined the forum today, thought it would be best to start by putting up a photo for critique. I am basically here to learn from all of your critiques and suggestions. I am completely open to harsh criticism :)

This is photo of the Kanchenjunga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangchenjunga) massif taken from a place called Kaluk in the north-eastern state of Sikkim in Indian.

This is a beautiful photo. Not being an expert, I can only say it appears to be well composed and that I would not hesitate to get it enlarged so I could post it on a wall.

This is stunning...my only niggle on this beauty of an image is the shadow in the forefront that starts on the middle right side of the shot and moves at an angle to the left. I find it a bit distracting and with my limited knowlege I'm not sure if that is something fixable....for me at least anyhow.
Other than that, it's a great shot IMO! Looks almost like a watercolour.

It is quite a beautiful panorama. I agree with Casil regarding the shadow. Maybe consider cropping it. On my screen there is also some serious colour banding, but I assume that is from compression.

Yes I believe compression is affecting this photo. Lovely composition here.

Ananda - directly uploading photos that are more than 250k will compress them. Anything below 250K works very well. My uploads are always around 125k.

I too see this..the blue line. I would of been nice if the light could of just been soft to the mountain line..but I'm not sure if that was possible.

I think that was a very difficult photo to take! Such dark shadows and bright areas of sky and snow peaks ... and then throw in the haze and you have a concoction of problems to deal with. Therefore this isn't a bad effort at all.

I do like the composition also. Might be nicer if the shadows can be lightened a little perhaps.

Welcome; a very nice image. I almost wonder though if it might not be improved by a crop to remove the very RH side of the image and the "blue line"? Looking forward to more!

first of all, thanks to all of you for providing such great feedback on my first post. with the time zone difference, it has taken me some time to respond :)

about the slanting shadow and the blue band, there were very tall mountains to my left behind which the sun was rising. the light from the right was almost like directional searchlights, hence the distinct shadows.

yes indeed with the mist and everything, it was difficult to balance the exposure. based on your feedback, probably i should try to crop the bottom, or bring out some shadow details through post processing...

i keep the compression bit in mind next time too...

What a beautiful location !!! As other have stated the shadows on the right are a little distracting. I bet it was a difficult location to shoot:)
