View Full Version : November 2009 Photography Assignment- Landscapes - cityscapes in portrait orientation

I was just looking at some of Darwin Wigget's work and was thinking landscapes or cityscapes in portrait orientation might be an idea.

Darwin Wiggett - Photographer - Photography.ca (http://www.photography.ca/photographer/wiggett_darwin.html)

Oh yeah, it ties in with Marko's latest podcast as well. :)

I like that idea! tying into the podcast --good thinking Raiven!

Sounds cool and then we could do portraits in landscape orientation another month.

a very cool suggestion raiven

I'm game! Love doing landscapes portrait way!

I am going with the idea too, although I won't have such really great landscapes here as you all have.

I am going with the idea too, although I won't have such really great landscapes here as you all have.

are you kidding? Are you seriously saying that there are no great landscapes in Europe? we need to do an exchange

Looks like a winner... winner winner chicken dinner. :D

Are you seriously saying that there are no great landscapes in Europe? Noooo - I am only speaking for my little, little place where I am living (and I was comparing with all your wiiiiiiiiddddde landscapes!)

Noooo - I am only speaking for my little, little place where I am living (and I was comparing with all your wiiiiiiiiddddde landscapes!)

phew. okay then :) hopefully maybe you can come here and get some.

I hope this landscape capture qualifies for this assignment. The title is "Mother Mary" as that is the name on this wonderful old grave stone. Mary died in 1887 in rural Southern Ontario, Canada. It is such a quiet peaceful place - jimmy :)

I took this from the Calgary Jewish Cemetary today. I hope the levelling is better. It's strange...almost like an optical illusion, it looked completely straight on the tripod, got home and it was off quite a bit so not sure what's going on up there....
This is an HDR using 7 shots.

Casil and I attended a lecture by Darwin Wigget today who more or less inspired this month's theme. It was a very informative lecture, about the use of lenses, how the different focal lengths affect the outcome and depth of field and all that good stuff. He also lectured on how to use your lenses to portray or accentuate elements of your photo, etc. Ha! Then he tells us he uses mostly Perspective Control lenses for his landscapes and also uses the shift function to create the squares and long portrait oriented photos that are stitched together later in post. Quite interesting to know how they are done. Something to aspire to! Love his long exposure landscapes as well.

OK? Perhaps someone can explain to a newb what portrait orientation means. Is it a vertical shot vs a horizontal? If it is, well, I guess I'm pooched as I despise taking photo's vertically...

Yes mate ... portrait orientation means taking the shot vertically so the longer side of the photo is vertical.

You shouldn't despise it as it can be another tool in your arsenal. You'll notice I rarely used portrait for landscapes though I believe landscapes do look better in landscape most often.
BUT ... think of a waterfall that drops quite a way. You'd see bugger all detail of the falls if you used landscape so portrait is usually better in that situation. In a city, shooting a building, tower, walkway that stretches from top to bottom may look better in portrait as well.

So ... don't be 'pooched' ... be challenged ... you have a few days left ... go shoot something and make it work :)

Darwin Wigget, who actually was the inspiration for this challenge uses portrait orientation in his landscapes quite often. Take a look here Darwin Wiggett - Photographer - Photography.ca (http://www.photography.ca/photographer/wiggett_darwin.html) They are jaw droppingly beautiful.

Honestly, it goes back to a vacation I took with a friend who took every picture vertical, this was before the days of digital and when we got back and got the pictures developed we were the headless wonders in every picture he took.

It also doesn't feel right to me, holding the camera that way. I dunno. I guess I'll have to work on that.

haha. that's good. after last nights adventures with Mr. Tanqueray, that's very fitting... had a night to myself for once and just sat with a couple new friends and enjoyed some drinks and a chauffered ride home from my favourite waitress. She rocks.

I went out this afternoon and tried a few portrait shots, came up with nada decent. I think it will take a bit to get the portrait frame of mind. Something else to work on.
