Sun was late in the afternoon, I had to take it with my 300mm lens from the side of a road while dodging cars, to the left was a newer barn, to the right was a power pole, so this is really the only shot I had.
Color, BW or neither?

I like the b/w better but the sharpness is off here. Exif shows 1/400
Were you on a tripod?

No, no room.
I will have to go back earlier in the day when there is less traffic and the sun is higher in the sky.
No. I wouldn't go when the sun is higher in the sky. You'll just get highlights and way to dark shadows going on.
I'd try a cloudy day, sun hidden or early morning. Bring a tripod if the shutter is too long to keep it sharp.

I seem to see a lack of sharpness in this...and other...images of yours. The Orchard shot is similar......This image needs to be sharp in order to work.
Still.....in general...sharpness is an issue for you. The exif indicates a sharpness setting of "soft", and it's also a bit underexposed....
I like where you are going with your work, but these are a couple of issues that seem to need work....Best Regards, Robert

sharpness aside, the exposure seems off to me... the color photo seems a bit greyish...

I just checked the settings on the canera and the image sharpening was set to off, I changed it to normal (D100).
I am really just beginning to scratch the surface of photography in general, and digital in particular.
I have learned more here in three days than ever before, so if I seem greedy, please understand.
As to this kind of feedback, I am greedy!
