View Full Version : January 2010 Photography Assignment - Macro or Close-up

Anybody got any? I'm blank but we have a new decade so something along those lines?
Other brainstorming thoughts:

Juxtaposition
Opposites attract
Primary colours
Winter VS Summer (gets everyone involved on both sides of the equator and both are equally challenging)

Anybody else?

I've been noticing this day approaching. Frankly, I'm flummoxed. I've been trying to think of something but I'm empty. Not even a single suggestion :(

lemme see...
Decay?
Perspective?
Up close and personal? (macro type or close up shots)

How about photography cliches? Actually macro would be cool.

I like up close and personal (macro) also....perspective might be fun or juxtaposition.

given that we'll be stuck inside a lot (either due to heat or cold) macro might be fun because it can be done in or out!

I'll go with that. Macro (or Close Up) since not everyone has a macro lens.

How about playing with DOF. Two shots, (same shots) but with two different DOF to show how it can alter a photo and get different results.

I'm into the macro or close-up idea fer sure.

Ditto on the macro!

I think we're "close" on reaching a consensus here.

How about something a bit artsy??
Like an image titled "Jealousy"...or....."Lusty".....or whatever, but you get the idea?

Robert

Macro or close-up has the most support from members so that's our assignment this month. Merging suggestion posts now.

Who will post first? :)

so what are kenko macro extension tubes? they sound really cool :)

They reduce the minimum focal length of the lens so you can get closer and still focus. You can get really cheap ones from EBay, but you lose Auto Focus. You can get the Canon genuine one for $quillions, but these Kenko ones were not too expensive and AF is retained. I'll try a review after I have used them for a while.

Marko did a podcast on Macro not too far back which explains some of the options. Actually here it is Macro photography on the cheap – Photography podcast #37 (http://www.photography.ca/blog/?p=75)

I finally took the time to take a peek at what everyone is doing for this assignment! For those that do not experience snow, cold and frozen things, what a neat way for them to see very close shots of nature. I love the little boy's beautiful brown eye and seeing his smooth, young skin.... I love the creativity of the photos that are posted... all of them!! Bambi - your sand bas relief is an awesome catch!!! Bravo, mates, Bravo!

This assignment is a really fun one to do! Let's see if we can have a good 30 submissions! Go for it!!!

okay TT, this shot made me think of this:

Subj:.Colored Pills Poem (S542c)
From: gordonschuk
on 5/30/2007

A row of bottles on my shelf
Caused me to analyze myself.
One yellow pill I have to pop
Goes to my heart so it won't stop.
A little white one that I take
Goes to my hands so they won't shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot
Tell me I'm happy when I'm not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
And tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
Or cough or choke or even sneeze.
The red ones, smallest of them all
Go to my blood so I won't fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright
Prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills
Helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I'd really like to know..........
Is what tells each one where to go!

A close up of a variant of a dry fly (that I tie for trout fishing). It is mounted on a wine bottle cork for the shot. Thanks for the encouragement on my previous close-up/macro attempt. Really enjoying the other submissions and don't get me going on the Lego. After raising four sons, our house was awash in the stuff, swore year after year that I was going to put the Lego Corp down on my income tax as a dependant LOL.

Deciding today's photo was going to be an open old book, this is the page i opened the book to....the quote is appropriate for how i feel about my looks.
it reads:
"As a beauty I'm not a great star;
There are others more handsome by far;
But my face I don't mind it
Because I'm behind it-
'Tis the folks out in front of that jar."
-A. Euwer-

From the quote, came the idea of the montage...

I've REALLY been struggling with my photography lately. I went to The Camera Store when I was in Calgary at the beginning of the month, and picked up the accessory kit for my LensBaby - hoping to expand my use of it. (awesome store, BTW) I shot a whole bunch indoors with the macro and tele bits, but was not getting it right.
I carried the camera all month, and have gone in the field two days to try to wrap my head around the block. Finally something clicked yesterday, so I feel a bit better.
Here's one of the LensBaby shots, I tried for lemonade on this one:

Now Iggy, if you read the posts it's Mad Aussie who says that it's you. I said no such thing.....

I was not referring to you at all :grouphug:

Cleaning out my camera bodies and doing thorough cleaning of all my lenses and other equipment. Will be doing some photography I hope over the next few days I am in Cornwall. Anyway I saw the Brownie and popped off a shot and ah, sort of ok with it but this was the only photo I took and now all my gear is away and not looking to pull it all out again after is was all safely packed and put away for travel. Next time I need to take 2 or 3 shots in my dimly lit office and maybe turn on a light, use a flash or something lol. This frame I used once before, thought I would give it another go. I never use frames but I like this one and since I won't be printing it or using it for anything else I thought I would see how it looked.

This is the best I could come up with, taken with an old EF100-300 from the early 90's. I can't seem to get the barb to not be so pixelated & over sharpened and still bring out the detail of the hoar frost.

Ok i am new here so i don't know if i'm clicking on the right icons etc..etc...really liking these macro images shared. It is a good time of year to catch frosty close-ups. Nicely done. I am going to keep checking everything out here on the forum, hopefully soon i'll figure out how to upload and share as well.
Thanx Everybody.

Not crazy about the stupid blinding sunspot reflection on the building, but I like the way the light from it caught the frost.

I dunno, having the light source in the frame isn't all that bad either. I'm just wishing the wind hadn't blown all the frost off here. I was looking forward to trying some OCF shots with my old Vivitar 283 & coloured filters that I have. (FYI, never attach a Vivitar 283 directly to your camera!)

Thanks Casil, this is my first attempt at macro. It sort of happened by accident. I ordered a step up ring for my filters, but they sent one with the wrong thread.
