Hmmm......why is everyone so ....um....er.....non-critical?

I look at this image and my first reaction is, "Oh, a dead person." This from the pose and specially the eyes....AND, of course, no one will create a photo of a 'femme fatale' and have the viewer looking up her nostrils! So there.....I didn't care for it much......Robert

again. thanks for your insight, robert... this is not a critique thread....it is a show picture thread...in these threads, you do not critique, you comment on what you may enjoy about the pic. hope that helps you understand the way this thread works.... would you like me to post this pic in the critique thread?

That's a little harsh don't ya think?
In answer to your question:
I'm non critical because A) I love the photo and B) because this photo is in the Show section and not the critique section. If making nonconstructive and borderline insulting comments like that are your type of thing Tefnut7 then I suggest you might consider joining a different forum as we just don't go for that sort of thing here. :)

You've done a great job on the eyes especially. Really sharp and capturing. Nice work!

Lol, maybe her evil ways got her dead?

No.....If the purpose of people posting any remarks is that they all be sycophantic and warm/fuzzy, then I shall keep quiet.

And as for "borderline insulting, and non-constructive" is concerned.......you have a very twisted way of comprehending what are valid remarks......

Please, let's not start to point fingers at each other. I'm sure you were only trying to help Robert. Maybe a little blunt, and considering the section we're in a little unexpected. So I hope you can understand other people reactions. You've caught us off guard. ;) So let's all not take it personally and just get on. You don't need to lie about liking a shot (at least I never do), but there is no need to point out improvements all of time. We should all stimulate each other. After all, photography should be fun. That's why we do it... :)

Well said, 42.....I'll pull the critical eye back some.....mind you, if all we are expected to do is sprinkle sugar over everything, then I'm not sure why anyone would post anything at all....

And...I wasn't suggesting "improvements", I was saying what my reactions were to the image which I assume would be entirely appropriate in a website called "Fine Art"

And where is the stimulation to each other you mention, if all we are expected to say is nothing more than sugar sprinkling?

So I guess that now I'll just look in at the critique forum occasionally, and not bother to post anything else either.....because, why would I? No one is going to say anything of value anyway in case I get mad and leave. Surely there is a bit more backbone in us than that!?

It's not so much your reaction but how you said it. You don't have to like any photo. However, in your post you implied that everyone who said they like it were either lying or had no taste. Based on previous posts by these guys I am sure that they liked it. Also the whole tone was one of 'that photo really sucks' (intended or not). However, that was not constructive because a person's reaction to a comment like that is to get defensive and no one can learn if they are being defensive.

You were called on your tone and then you became defensive. YOu can think that any of my shots are awful and I'm okay with that. However, if you post on it I would prefer you to tell me what to do to improve it not just that you think it's awful.

Post here or in the critiques as you like. It's a free forum. I have enjoyed seeing your work and would miss you.

"I would prefer you to tell me what to do to improve it"

But Bambi, a previous poster said NOT to suggest improvements!!

Can't win it seems. In your remaks the suggestion is that I said "it sucks", and you go on to say that anyone would get defensive to a comment like that. I agree.....But I never said that!! ,You did, in paraphrasing my comment!!.

Believe me....If I think something 'sucks' I will say it in a way that needs no translation.....equally, If I think some image is 'awful' I'll say so in an unambiguous way.

I'm not going to quote.....don't need to.....but I ask you to take a look at the sugary meaningless remarks that greet what's posted....I mean, DO it, read them.

Anyway.....I do thank you for your remarks....you want 'peace in the valley', and I can respect that, but the valley needs to grow up a little.......unless it wants to remain a nursery for all its life......Regards, Robert

Maybe I shouldn't post but I feel I have to express my viewpoints on this one as Photography.ca and it's community means a lot to me and I hope that what I write can help everyone come to an understanding. Please note that I am not trying to attack anyone but rather inform or educate.

The "Show Your Photo" threads are not available for critiquing. There are minor exceptions to this. If you know the individual, like Bambi, wouldn't mind or if you are exceedingly polite about one specific aspect that you think would make the photo rock. Otherwise, appreciate the good points or don't say anything.

Whether it was intended or not the comments come across a bit harsh. What we have to remember is that not everyone has the same level of skill or ability and what we try to do in this forum is to foster those skills and abilities for the sake of improvements. The "Show Your Photo" threads are a nursery in a sense in that we are encouraging people to grow and yes, it should absolutely remain that way. Saying the "valley needs to grow up a little" is somewhat condescending which I find disrespectful.

I hope that my comments will be helpful and not hurtful. :fingerscr
