Chinook Sunset Over the Bow River

Thought I would give this HDr thing a go. I think I am having some focus problems with my D300. Don't quite know what it is. I tried out the two lenses on the D60 and they were nice and sharp, so that's not it. Was using the camera on a tripod with the automatic lockup for the mirror so should not be mirror shake. Looking at the scene through the lens was sharp and the camera said it was sharp but the photos do not seem as sharp as they should be to me. Anyway, I digress...

These blocks of ice are amazing. I like the composition you used here with the blocks as foreground interest.

There's a lot of blue in the ice. Is this real looking or should you have white balanced/corrected that out?

The crop looks a bit odd here also. I think either a more portrait crop or a landscape crop that maybe keeps the heavy cloud but leaves out the blue sky etc above might work well.

I find the background building in the distance a bit of a distraction and I also see several dust spots in the image (in the clouds) that should be removed. The ice blocks add interest in the foreground however but as MA said I would adjust the crop a bit.

I was trying for a 11X14 crop but I see I overcropped the long side.

DO the individual photos before the HDR process look sharp R? Often after processing an HDR you lose the sharpness I think due to the brighter, blown out sections not having any sharpness at all.

Well if that's a small section (meaning you've zoomed in and cropped) then it looks quite good in sharpness to me.

I like that crop much better. I also didn't realize the first one was actually HDR. The golden sky seems more impacting in this case also I think.

I quite like the juxtaposition of the city and the natural landscape.
The ice blocks are awesome. I like the golden sky, but it does seem noisier than the other images.

I find the background building in the distance a bit of a distraction ..... I agree with this. It's not a terrible distraction but it's the least interesting part of the image and it's right in the crosshairs. Both the sky and the icerocks are so much more interesting. I think had you lowered your perspective and shot upward a bit you could have eliminated the city and had the icerocks merge with the sky. Just a suggestion if a retake is possible easy.
