opening RAW images in GIMP

I have not been able to open raw images in GIMP which has been a PITA. However, I subscribe to a blog which posted this:

That's weird... never had a problem. Of course, you've gone Nikon and I shoot Canon. Mind you, in order to get the ability to look at my RAW's in a more RAW format, I installed UFRaw which is free but very complicated. Not really sure how to use the darn thing.
